It seems steam don't want to accept my debit card (2024)
A continuation of a post Valve locked because of a "recent post", aka some "steam update".

Smh. They should get POFMA'd...

Old discussion: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/3279192886595103384/

It appears that this is a real problem for users of POSB/DBS debit card users, mainly Singapore users.

Recently, bought a some stuff about a month ago on steam. Less than 2-3 weeks later, I couldn't buy anything because my card was locked/restricted for no real reason. I managed to buy through PayNow.

Less than 3 days later, I attempted to buy another item on steam, PayNow now doesn't exist and was forced to pay through a third party company, in my case, Paypal.

What is going on at Valve? Is this affecting all Singapore users under POSB/DBS?

The issue is that I am just as legitimate as you claim as you are.

This seems like Valve is doing a blanket ban on users with POSB/DBS debit cards

If this is true, is there anything we can do on the legal side of things? Silly question I know, but this is ridiculous.

Don't know. Not even sure if all POSB/DBS Master debit cards are affected.

Maybe the bank could tell us more?

unless they hiding, not wanting to tell us

I decided to go through VISA on another method. I lost the battle and fight honestly. Steam should be ashamed of itself.

I can only surmise they are moving towards getting rid of Debit Cards as a payment option on their system or there was a widespread fraud/scam event recently involving debit payments.

Feels bad being a Steam customer especially after having supported them for so many years. Still wouldn't patronise Epic games though haha.

It could just be an issue with the bank and not Steams fault at all as it only seems to be effecting those who are using a specific bank.
Have you tried asking the bank yet? Because none have said what their bank has said yet.
If the issue was on Steam's end, there would of been a statement made about it.
Also, Steam won't drop debit card usage as that is a LARGE portion of how users pay.

DBS or POSB is SIngapore's most used bank for local citizens; it is the national bank of the country and is intrinsically tied to many official organisations or entities, e.g. it's the default bank for public school students and conscripted soldiers.

It seems on the discussion page for this issue, I was told the same thing as other Singaporean bank account holders of DBS/POSB: it is not the bank's issue/bank side that is restricting the payment for Steam transactions.

Noted on the debit card payment for steam for real. Good to learn.

I'll say it again: Has anyone contacted the bank and ASKED them what is going on?
Money being rejected is not always Steam's fault.

I already stated this in the earlier comment.

From the recently locked post:

"Also i replaced my card thinking it was a card issue. Same thing.
Called the bank they are not aware."

"Use anything except dbsposb master debit. Visa debit works. Grabpay works. Rest i havent try.

Write support ticket no use. I tried. Change card number also no use. I tried"

I'll add this quote from the previously locked post:

it affects the bank's master debit. posb dbs visa debit is fine. (for now)

so i dont think is bank issue.

also a brand new card and number also get blocked, so i think it is targetting dbs posb master debit

i dont have other master debit from other banks to try. so i have no idea if its just posb dbs, but from the chat here seems like it is affecting particularly posb dbs and master debit

Mastercard themselves have a history of blocking transactions on Steam in many countries and with their many different services and partnered brands, especially gift cards.

I stated it earlier. I contacted my bank and I believe others in this discussion (and an earlier one closed by Valve because fishy) shared that they did too.

I was told it was not an issue on the bank's side.
