Mortal Kombat 11 (MK11) game won't play local

My brother and I bought MK11 on steam and it was working well. Then suddenly there was an issue in the Kustomize mode that caused the game to crash. After that the game will not play Local mode or kustomize mode.
If you were to select Local, the UI elements will all vanish as per normal but nothing else will happen. Only the background will be displaying.

We have tried reinstalling and verifying the files but still seem to be stuck.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated

Note that Story mode, krypt and training mode work totally fine. It's only local and kustomize that doesn't work.
