The title's the message I received. I was sending a message to a person who wasn't on my friends list because I was trying to get a new friend. Anyways, I sent a message to them and got the message in the title. I don't really get it, since I sent like maybe 3 or something messages already but that was to one of my friends. The last time I messaged someone who wasn't on my friends list was way back in January, and the first and last time someone who wasn't on my friends list messaged me was 2+ weeks ago. After I got the message, I sent a test message to one of my friends, and it was sent without a hassle. If anyone can help me, that'd be nice because I'm just kinda confused about it.



Edit: OKAY. I'm really confused right now. I messaged that same person again, and it worked. The person who replied to this discussion said you can't pm people who aren't on your friends list and apparently steam sent the wrong message. I don't mean any hate to them, but it appears they're wrong. This is truly strange.

The reason you're getting an error is because you cannot private message people not on your friends. If you could scammers would be private messaging everyone all the time.

Clearly Steam is showing the wrong error.

Weird. I've messaged people on steam without them being on my friends once before and I've been messaged by someone who wasn't on my friends list. Maybe it has something to do with the person being online or something? It's still just a bit weird.

Perhaps these guys were in one of your groups?

You can't message someone which whom you don't have contact.
It is not possible.
Otherwise we all would get spam messages all the time.

Oh, actually, yes. The person I messaged was in a group I was also in. Same goes for the person I messaged previously and the person who messaged me. I guess that does make sense.

You can only get messages from someone not in friend list if they were in same chat group as you, otherwise they can't message you, or had been blocked while in same group chat.

its just them detecting you as spamming, its happened to me when i sent my friend the same cat pic over and over
idk why ppl here are saying you cant message ppl ur not friends with, because you can and i regularly do, u just have to have a chat open before you unfriend
