Cannot change steam country due to purchase failing.
Recently I've decided instead of playing TF2 for the rest of my life that I should try some different games.

I decided to try to buy some new games but unfortunately I was unable to due to the fact that everytime I try to purchase something it gives me the error message "An unexpected error has occurred. Your purchase has not been completed. Please contact Steam Support."

I figured it was because of the fact that I had moved to the U.S. (permanently) quite recently and my steam account is still in the Czech Republic.

I contacted steam support afterwards and was unfortunately given the most vague and uncomprehensive non-sense that I've ever heard.

Ticket Log:

Me: I no longer reside in the Czech Republic and I would like my steam wallet currency to be updated to the United States Dollar instead of Euros. I have a valid payment method and billing address for the United States.

Steam Support: You need to make your purchase in the region where you're currently located, by using a payment method that's associated with a local address. We at Steam Support can't change the Store Country on your behalf.

Steam store prices and currencies are based on your location. You'll see all available payment methods for your region during the checkout process.

You can make changes to your store region only when you move to another region.

Please review our Steam Store Country article for more information.

Me: I can't make a purchase at all due to the fact that it keeps giving me this error every time I try to purchase something. There's absolutely nothing wrong with my debit card as I can purchase things on other steam accounts with no problem whatsoever.

Could you please fix this?

Steam Support: Hello,

Your Card ending in **** cannot be used to change your Store Country.

To continue purchasing, please use a payment method issued in [Insert Country] and enter a billing address that matches this location.

Note: Some local payment methods do not require you to enter an address. Please review all available payment methods for your region during the checkout process.

For additional information, please review our Store Country.

Me: My Card was issued in the United States and that's the only card I have. How else am I supposed to change my store country?

Steam Support: Hi. You will need to use another payment method also issued in US if you are trying to update your Store Country or your purchases will continue failing.

If you have any unrelated concerns, please let us know. Otherwise, we will close this help request

Me: How come my payment method isn't valid? Also - even if I try to just simply save my payment method to my account it doesn't work and continues giving me this "unexpected error".

I read the Steam Country FAQ and it states nothing about having to use a certain payment method to change your store country.

"If you have moved to a new place, or are living abroad for an extended period of time, you can update your Steam country setting when you complete your first purchase using a payment method from that country."

"Your store country must be set to the country where you currently reside and you must have a local payment method you can use to make purchases."

It says nothing about not being able to use a MasterCard for purchasing. It says "local payment method" in which I have.

I'm able to use my card on other steam accounts and have been able to use my card in the past to change my country by travelling.

This is an account issue and I don't think this has anything to do with my card.

- Thank you.

To add

Here's a screenshot of the error message I get even when trying to just simply save my payment method.

I get the exact same error even if I try to purchase something using my steam wallet credits using my billing address in the Czech Republic.

Steam Support: Hello,

I understand where you're coming from.

As previously recommended, kindly use other form of payment. Unfortunately, we at Steam Support can't change the Store Country on your behalf.

Since there's not much more that I can say or do to be of help with this particular issue, I am going to close this help request.

Feel free to open a new ticket if you have other Steam concern aside from this.

(Note: I did not add the [Insert Country] thing, that was literally already there.)

What do I do now? I don't live in the Czech Republic anymore and I would like to change my steam country but it seems impossible due to these constant errors I keep getting.

Please help!

Hi bro, I also met this issue, searched for answers online and then came here... And I think they're too lazy to solve the players' issues

I made 2 different Visa cards in my new region and they still insist the payment method is not a valid for store change. but guess what, if I use these cards on another account already on the region, they work! These guys just refuse to escalate this to a bug.

Um. if you moved you have tell them that. You can't just change currencies when ever you want. it's not like a bank that you can't exchange fiat as a tourist, and since you moved you need to tell Steam you moved somewhere.
That's the law and the ToS. if you dont agree you cant use Steam or the currency you need to on Steam.
I mean how do you tell someone you moved? by giving them the personal address...

Did you ever get a resolution to this? My husband is having exactly the same issue, also having moved from the Czech Republic, and we're trying to figure out how to get his store country updated. He's using a card that he got here.

well i had a similar problem. chosing the option for domestic method of payment which took me to a 3rd party website for payment completion using the SAME CARD, solved my problem.

Hey mate, do you mind explaining a bit more about this "domestic method of payment"? I'm in the same situation, and there's no such thing on my payment options sadly, only mastercard, visa, paypal and other CC types.

Having this issue now. Both my card, one mastercard and one visa dont work. My friend's card, literally the same VISA card as mine, issued at the same bank, same date since we went together, worked. What?

I have had same issue. The trick that worked for me was using my debit card for my first purchase to change store, Then I was able to use my credit card from other purchases.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
