Steam Launch Options
I'm just wondering if anyone knows how much Steam launch options actually affect performance? Like if you put "-nojoy -novid -fullscreen -high -threads 8" into a game's launch commands (Not all those commands specifically. Just an example.)

I've always heard that -nojoy improves performance, as well as those other commands, but I just don't know how true it is. I've just trusted that it does

The launch options you have in your post mostly apply to Source Engine games only. You can find recommended launch options [docs.comfig.app] with mastercomfig [comfig.app], a modern customization framework for Team Fortress 2 that claims to improve performance, hit registration, and more. Here's what the contributors of mastercomfig have to say for each launch option you have (except for -fullscreen, which is the same as changing the Display mode to Fullscreen in the game/beneficial for performance). You can find and learn more about launch options on their website.

Recommended Launch Options [docs.comfig.app]
  • -nojoy : stops Joystick system from starting up, faster startup and less memory usage
  • -novid : disables Valve startup logo, saves time

Bad launch options [docs.comfig.app]
  • -high : high is a priority mode in Windows that is only recommended for short-lived, time critical threads. It can unbalance resource usage and decrease performance. Close applications on your PC instead or use Steam Priority Launcher to automatically set TF2 to Above Normal priority instead.
  • -threads : the Source Engine automatically determines the value for this, and caps it at 3, due to performance issues with higher values. Valve also recommends removing this launch option
