Little confused about the Steam points
I have had this account for awhile now but it wasn't until tonight I got on again it saying in my points profile that I have ever 5,000 points and I was wondering is there anyway I can use that to get a gift card instead or something like that because there's not:steamhappy:hing in the points place that I want cuz I really don't ever use steam I just only used it for a couple of games that was it.

Steam points are generated out of thin air so they cannot be converted into real money.

Steam Points are ONLY for cosmetic items in the Points Store.
Wallpaper, Avatars, Profile Designs and so on.
Thats it. They dont have any other function.

You can also award other users creations like comments, artwork, screenshots, reviews and such with a point prize which will give them 1/3 of the spend points on top of the award.

That is ALL you can use Steam Points for, no discounts, no vouchers, no gift cards.

sorry, partner

no monetary value

just a way to spruce up our profiles and posts

Those things are not supposed to have any monetary value and never will. It's really just a gimmick thing for the profile features, and an enticement to spend more for some users.
There will never be an official exchange mechanic. If there should be external platforms, that offer to trade profile awards for anything else (I doubt, there are), you use those at your own risk.

This, on the other hand, may not be completely correct either... Unlike items and, indirectly, gems, points always require money to have been spent by somebody at some point.

Yes but that money is not being subsidised to pay for the voucher. If someone buys a game then 70% goes to the publisher and 30% to Valve. If a voucher is then generated because of points earned then someone has to pay the redeemable amount so the recipient of the product bought with the voucher isn't out of pocket.

So sure, they are generated upon a purchase but they are generated out of thin air because they have no forwarding monetary value.

This, on the other hand, goes for a majority of the items, you will find on the market place, too. "Skins", "weapons" and the like do kind of pop into existence out of nowhere.

But those have endless forwarding monetary value potential which is driven between community members and dictated only by them. Anyhow that isn't the same thing because if points are to be monetised then Valve are the only ones who could subsidise the initial redeemable value and that would absolutely obliterate their ongoing operating capital unless the vouchers have such a low generation rate that it then becomes totally pointless or an expensive endeavour to earn them per account.
Thanks guys I was trying to use them for a steam card
