Naming and shaming policy seems flawed
With the reporting system being an absolute joke, I can't help but wonder if there's some value to be had in having certain groups be named and shamed.

Though this will likely only apply to public chat rooms and assuming people are fast enough to get on a scammer's case, I wanna think that naming and shaming scammers could do some good, as people can go to the offending chat room to verify the source of the name and shame and say "yeah, this name and shamer knows what he's talking about"

The problem is it's your word vs someone else and in most cases the other person is not around to defend themselves.

How would you like it if someone made a post saying you did something like that and you were not around to do anything about it?

It also falls under harassment/cyber bullying laws in a lot of places.

It'd be less "my word vs someone else" and more "hey, this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is posting malicious links on (Chat room of official game hub) and people are actually falling for it", where i'd show some screenshots of the scam taking place followed by the game hub where the links are being spammed, so players can verify the N&S claim for themselves.

screenshots can be faked. again, if you see another account violating the rules, you REPORT IT correctly.

Also names themselves can be changed at anytime and you would be required to post a persons steam profile link for a unique user.

And reports do nothing because Valve would rather scam victims double dip on games that they've been heavily invested in to generate more sales on their platform.

The thing is that the main defence against getting scammed isn't Valve, Steam Support, Police, Banks or whatever - it's cynicism.

I don't know you therefore I don't trust you. It should be simple enough, but it isn't. Most of us are wired to trust people who are offering us something or say that they're in a position of authority, and being that cynical goes against this - and that's why scams keep working.

So get the scam 'victim' to point the finger at the 'perp', get the evidence and take it from there. Too late - by the time Support read the ticket the item will have already been sold for crypto. It's also easily abused - if you can't tell how then you're lacking the cynicism needed to protect yourself from scammers. And that's the thing...

I don't know you therefore I don't trust you... and I don't know you, therefore I don't trust you. Harsh but necessary. So, when I see multiple angles where someone could take advantage of this, I don't trust the person coming up with the idea and neither will a company like Valve or anyone else.

Capisci?

Or that they are reluctant to make kneejerk reactions to reports that may possibly not be genuine. Valve does ban users. We see them come to these same forums asking what they can do to get unbanned. But there has to be more than just a report. They need to see it for themselves, and that doesn't include evidence that you provide but evidence that they can rely on which is information you won't have access to.

That's because it really is. I get the intention, however.
