I keep having games I'm playing broken by updates and I can't turn updates off.
The only option here is "prevent updates except when I run the game" but I don't even want it to update in that case. I had a game broken today by that. I cannot play that game any more because it was updated, and if I had known about it (which wasn't something I could really pay attention to tbh) apparently there was a published guide (you know, a group of instructions you have to make an effort to do that isn't listed inside the game or anything) to prevent this from happening but now that's it's done, well.

Apparently the only way to fix it is to imperfectly manually roll things back which isn't reliable and honestly the fact that this could be preventable is what's driving me crazy. This happens all the time to me, with a lot of different sorts of games, and honestly if I can get something working myself and then the company breaks it by trying to fix things and I just ask HOW TO STOP THIS I shouldn't be the crazy person.

Simple answer is: you don't.

Steam's primary reason for existence was so that developers could push updates to their users easily.

gotcha. use other services whenever possible as literally every time I ever ask anyone for help with anything it's met immediately with an answer either like that or "I just don't have that problem"

Ask Todd Howard to provide beta branches (an option on Steam) for Fallout 4, so you can play with your 3rd party mods which are compatible with the previous version.

Secondly 3rd party mods need to be compatible with the game version, not vice versa and Bethesda do zero regarding mod compatibility when they patch their games, despite Todd being grateful for modders keeping their games alive beyond their lifespan, hence why he he makes the latest reference to Starfield.

And finally you should be running Fallout 4 via F4SE but it needs to be updated since the new patch for Fallout 4 came out.

This is a user forum. Nobody here can provide you a solution that does not exist. Steam provides an option for publishers to offer a the older version as a beta branch, sadly Bethesda doesn't. You can suggest to Valve that they change their update model, but the suggestion was made before and I doubt Valve will implement it.

also, one thing i'm going to point out

1) in multiplayer online games, if you going to team up with people, then everyone's game version must be the same version.

or else, you can't play with them at all.

for example, in Fallout 4, you got friends playing that game.

your game version for Fallout 4 is 1 or 2 versions below your "friends" latest version of the game.

how are you suppose to team up with your friends in Fallout 4 when the versions of your game and theirs is vastly different?????

You could use Tharon's tool 'Please Do Not Update Me':

Can also do things manually by getting the manifest from SteamDB & editing the game's appmanifest file.

i do not recommend this for Multiplayer Online Games like

1) dota 2

2) CS 2

3) PUBG

4) tom clancy's rainbow six siege

..........etc.

what "tintingaroo" suggest will only works for Single Player Games like

a) Fallout 4

Also appreciate that. I don't really play a lot of multiplayer games anymore and the stuff i do play is usually co-op stuff and i've experience with that-- but maybe someone else doesn't and wouldn't intuit that you all need to be on the same version. When modding multiplayer games you almost always all need the same stuff installed on your side too.

So, thank you for your help.

Developer can add various branches to a game if they wish to maintain previous versions for compatibly reasons

Paradox had so many of them at one point Valve made them reduce the number

Tell gamedevs to use steam's features to let you lock in a version. If they don't, then they want you on the most recent version.
