Can the trade history be faked/wrong?

So went for a trade, with seemingly reputable guy. Dude says I got API Scammed, but trade history shows the item going to his account. He didn't receive the item? The trade offer I sent even showed in the steam chat window with him.

So is this even possible? If I got scammed surely the history would show the item going to a different account?

No, it can not be faked, other accounts can use the same profile name and profile picture though. Make sure it actually is the same account.

Additionally:
Hijacked, not hacked. You leaked your account credentials somehow.

Do not trade until your account is secured.

Take the following steps to secure your account:

1. Scan for malware. https://www.malwarebytes.com/
2. Check that the email and phone number on the Steam account are still yours.
3. Deauthorize all other devices. https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
4. Change passwords from a clean computer.
5. Generate new backup codes for your Mobile App. https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage

I can't remember a case, where the trade story has proven to have been manipulated. Seems more likely, your trade partner is making this up.
However, there are a few stories like yours floating around since a few days. It might be possible, that there is some new backdoor. Let's hope, there isn't.

Yeah, it shows the same person/account, when I click the account link in the trade history. So there is no way for the item to have gone anywhere else, than what the trade history shows?

Yeah, I thought that it would be unlikely, that the history could be duped. It just seemed that the dude was legit, but maybe not then. The traded item wouldn't show in his inventory until the trade hold is over right?

Also if there is some new backdoor is there any way to open a ticket with support? Should be easy enough for them to check, if the item actually went to him or not.

They could, sure. It's only on a 7 day cooldown for trading, which leaves a 3 day window to do whatever with it and the other person would never know.

Well, the dude sent me a video with timestamps, that shows his inventory and the item is not there. So either I am the victim of a most elaborate scam, or the trade history can indeed be faked.

Yes, that would be the simplest explanation, but still the dude would have had to fake a video in minutes, since that's how long it took him to send it to me. That also seems unlikely, but idk.

I opened a ticket with support on this. What is the likelihood, that they actually check anything? Should be easy enough to confirm, if either participant of the trade has the item. And if not where did it go, since there is no transaction showing.
