Tagging. How does it work?

So I recently wanted to change the tags to reflect my updated gaming preferences. There doesnt seem to be a way to actually tell the site that you want to be shown X Y or Z kind of games. Having looked around to see if anyone else had this problem, I have concluded that the tagging system is either broken or I'm missing something.

Does the tagging system work based on games you have played/bought? So for example if I wanted TBS to be included would I have to play a TBS game? because if thats the case, its kind of silly that it works this way.
