PS4 Controller Issues With Dpad Only On Steam
My previous controller is old and having issues which is due to the controller itself, so i got a new one, but my new one has an issue where occasionally the down button on the dpad won't register, or input at all for a couple seconds. it happens very often, atleast once every 2 minutes where the input will be disabled for a few seconds or not register.

i 100% know this is not the controller itself, i've done multiple tests while looking at my input readings and it only happens on steam games, and multiple of them, and my other new controller does the same thing, but with my old controller it does not do this.

i don't know what to do, i've tried many things like enabling/disabling steam controller options and steam input, big picture mode and it's settings, resetting my controller settings via the config.vdf file, using DS4 Windows, nothing fixes it.

what could be the problem making steam have issues with only my new controllers? how do i fix this? i don't know what else to try myself. Please help.

If

* old controller works fine

and

* new controller does not work fine

then

that would usually indicate a problem with the new controller.

Steam Input and DS4 Windows are completely separate input mappers, so if the exact same problem happens with both, that further pushes suspicious towards hardware.

It's possible input mappers are interfering with each other I suppose. In which case, completely uninstall DS4 Windows or any others you may have installed.

It's possible the bluetooth channel the new controller is on is problematic (interference from other devices in your home). In which case unregister all controllers in Windows (Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices). Before reregistering the new controller, try playing something with a cable. If the problem still occurs, then you just ruled out bluetooth as the problem.

If the controller is new, can you not get it replaced or refunded?

Also, are you sure the controller is genuine? I bought a DS3 controller direct from Amazon years ago that turned out to be a fake. It was so convincing that only Sony could confirm it via the reused serial number. Amazon replaced it without quibbling.

Yeah my first thought was that the controller is faulty or not genuine. but it's not the hardware because i got another new controller and the same issue happens on that one too. i contacted playstation to check if my controllers were genuine and they said they were genuine.

i only started using DS4 Windows after getting this issue as a way to try troubleshoot and fix it.

i'm quite certain it's something to do with steam. i was testing it for 10 mins without steam running using https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad, no issues. i test it on Tekken 8 on steam, 2 minutes and it's not reading my down input for a few secs and keeps occasionally disabling the input every couple seconds. then after a few mins my down input isn't registering at all anymore, i close Tekken and steam, and instantly my down inputs are being read on hardwaretester clearly with no issues. it's not Tekken because the same thing happens on Street Fighter 6 on steam.

about bluetooth, i only use the controller wired, and because my other tests point towards it being a steam issue rather than a pc or hardware issue, it's probably not due to bluetooth?

What a mystery! And yeah, you're right, if you always use the controller wired, it's not a bluetooth issue.

I'm pretty sure Tekken 8 has native (built-in) dualshock support, so you should be able to play it without Steam Input enabled and without DS4 installed—without any kind of input mapping software at all.

I thought that might be the reason. Ie. Tekken is detecting the DS4, but Steam Input or DS4 are conflicting with it. But if the same thing happens with the same button in other games, it seems less likely.

I use a DS4 too and I have Steam Input disabled globally. I only reenable it for specific games which don't natively support the DS4.

This is clearly an issue with the steam client. This issue was already present in the beta version around January 19th. I got around this problem by stopping using the beta version. This problem is not limited to the PlayStation pad. The beta version on January 31st seems to have fixed the d-pad issue on some pads. Your pad might work if you use the beta version, but at least my PS5 pad doesn't. After this update, I can't play any games. My ps5 pad has been confirmed that it works without problems on Windows and PlayStation.

i just recently had the same issue with my xbox original controller, don't know if it helps with PS controller
the fix for me was, navigate:
steam client > steam settings > controller > scroll down > extended feature support driver > uninstall ...this auto-restarts PC
hope this helps

Yeah, same, dude, and it started to happening only a month or two ago, this is mad annoying, and I def checked my hardware, two of my ds4 works flawlessly everywhere, except games launched through steam (tekken 8, guilty gear strive, for example)

I'm using only wired connection, changed cables as well - still the same "down input" missing from time to time, and with the different length of it missing as well (it might from the start of the game in main menu, or after a few minutes of playing)

DS4Windows was installed years before, btw, and no issues were noticed in tekken 7 and even at the start of Tekken 8 as well, and in other games too.

BTW, big picture mode doesn't help and turning "steam inputs" or whatever it was called in steam options turning ds4 off completely.
Guess I need to keep looking for the solution (seems like there's none tho)
