Xbox 360 controller not reacognised
So i recently acquired an Xbox 360 controller with a USB wire so i could use it on my PC. Now the controller works fine, PC detects it and says its in working order. But no matter what i do, which tutorial i follow online, steam never seems to be able to detect my controller. whenever i go to the controller settings it just says "No controllers detected". Any ideas on what the problem might be? cause I'm seconds away from losing my mind

Real original Xbox controler. Authentic and nicely yelowed. it correctly shows up on the hardware list on my PC's controlpanel. even says it's working fine and all. so i'm pretty sure its a problem with steam

Can deny anything being amiss generally with current Steam and wired genuine Xbox 360 Controller. VID/PID for me and as far as I know the only actually genuine one is 045e:028e. Is yours?

I'm pretty sure that it isn't. Well, 99% sure anyway. Instead of relying on Control Panel, try typing joy.cpl and checking the controller's properties - that will bring up a screen showing the PC's responses every time you move a stick or press a button on the controller.

If I'm right then you shouldn't see any responses as the controller isn't connected to the PC. What you've probably got there isn't a wired controller - it's a wireless controller with a Play and Charge cable. Unfortunately all that cable does is carry power from the PC to the controller - it doesn't carry any data either way, so you'd still need to connect the controller to the PC through a wireless receiver.

Just to add to that; (Microsoft) Play & Charge cable would show up as USB 045e:028f. You as said should be seeing 045e:028e.

.. and if it shows up in joy.cpl / controllers check in advanced if it is selected for primary gaming device.

nontheless why do you need steam to recognize it anyway? steam input is for EMULATING a xbox pad if you _don't_ have genuine one. it should work in game anyway (as long as its supports gamepad).

for me it's almost the exact same, however mine says "045e:028f". idk what it means when "028" is "f" though

Yup, see Brujeira's reply above: you don't have a wired Xbox 360 controller but a wireless Xbox 360 controller plus a Microsoft Play & Charge cable. That cable only transports power and not data.

To make it work you'd additionally and as he/she said need a "Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows" wireless adapter" (045e:0719). Your controller does not have a USB interface and can not ever work with just that power cable that you have there.

Note; an actual wired Microsoft Xbox 360 controller does not have a detachable cable.
