Not Enough Free Storage? 400+GB Remain
Hey there,

I have a pretty extensive Steam game library, and I recently built my computer with a 500 GB SSD and two 1 TB hard drives to support having many games downloaded.

That said, I've run into an issue where, even though I still have over 400 GB remaining (both my computer and Steam Storage setting indicate as much), when I'm trying to download games that don't go past, say, 20 GB, it's saying I don't have enough free disc space.

I have gone through the standard fixes of rebooting my pc and Steam, clearing the download cache, checking for hard drive errors, and verifying game file integrities, but it's still popping up. Has anyone else run into this issue? If so, what is going on and how do I fix it?

Thanks!

Multi disk issue, wrong steam default drev, or DL already has been start at wrong disk, not enough free room.

Check steam Storage in what is default disk

ps.
assume steam multi is there , right click a game and see if you can see move option to other disk, that should be work if steam lib and free room is there.

The default disk is my storage space with that 400+GB and the folder is within the correct drive.

if you only have 1 disk , then there is only check disk for windows users and steam repair in storage management see the 3 dots for repair steam lib

ps.
old ways is use clear download cache, and trashcan to make sure there is enough free room.

make sure you know Computer administrtion, are you on windows or linux maybe ?

Tried that, too. No avail.

An example: I am trying to download Batman Arkham Knight which requires 50 GB of storage space. It says Not Enough Free Disk Space, but when I look at the Storage Tab under Settings, it clearly shows that I have 464.9 GB of Free Disk space, even with DLC, Updates, Shaders, Media, and Non-Steam being considered.

yeah and that why we ask, make no sense if you are sure even 50gb multipled by 3 or 5 is still under 250gb. +system and OS userdata.

Could it be the collection you actual try install multi games thats way more the 1 game alone with 55gb ( we have seen such before then collection has all-in-one install )

thats 80gb for collection roughtly thats 240gb to 400gb as old ways we calc then we did the zip dl then unpacking and then install. its one of them roughly calc we did back then.

+ event and game patch also why multiplied by 3 might have issue today. but only old games know them old ways.

How would I verify if that is the case?

try advance system clean and see if there is enough junk files you can free in disk clean up
also watchout for windows download folder , who know how many apps you have DL there, we all have seen multi version of same dl app there. even GPU drivers.

dont forget we dont normal talk about gb anymore with disk size that get past 4TB today.
same as ccleaner junk and temparary files wont fix the amont you looking for.

problem is get a external disk and dump thing on it you dont have store on boot disk , picture move and app you dl , laptop user might have more tips for you on the topic,

old rule was DL size multiplyed by 3 to 5, we have not seen unpacking yet go past 5 yet most game data today is even better packed then old games from the past.

just so you get it other user already seen other steam user have issue with BG3 150gb install on small diak.

dont forget we are only steam user here, we dont have all info sometimes what ppl are doing with the space

but we can see you are near the max collection if we use the dl size *5

I seen something similar when using protected folders.

Protected folders will not allow you to to do certain things.

Check to see if the Steam folder is in a protected folder (it will look green I believe the color is green) in File Explorer.

Also make sure that the disk volume is proper.

If you are using OneDrive and the Steam Library is on Drive C, make sure to exclude Steam in the OneDrive sync (same with any games because you do not want OneDrive to sync or backup Steam Client folders).

Are you using Dynamic Disk Volumes or Simple Volumes?

I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate this bug. I have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up internet connection (I still pay 50€ a month/lol).
I needed more than 5 hours to download the game. So when I got home from work, I started downloading it and then at night I just clicked the pause button. The next day I got this error message and ♥♥♥♥ I have to start the download from scratch. I'm furious.

Well it's not a universal problem. And perfection and software development is impossible. We don't know what perfection looks like and the amount of time it would take to get there would take too long. So software gets released with bugs and you deal with them as they go.

Also the specific details for each case may be relevant. You may not understand why, but there may be a reasonable explanation in your specific case.
