Adding/updating games to download queue stops current download/update
It's 2024 and this still appears to be an issue, unless of course there's an option to change this somewhere which I'm missing, in which case I would really like to know if anyone could help.

Even the work around of having to constantly click and pause each and every added game, and then click to resume the initially desired downloading or updating game becomes repetitive and frustrating.

On a side note, I hope that the entirety of any game's download or update patch's overall data size is 'fully' allocated to the storage medium and remains so, whether paused or resumed, in order to avoid unnecessary excess fragmentation of each games data files (obviously HDD'S & SSD's will differ here). If entire download size for each game is indeed pre-allocated to it's own localised storage space, then at the very least the constant clicking to pause new downloads/updates still proves tedious and unnecessary, yet something that Steam support could so easily change and update with inclusion of a 'Switch' within the Downloads section. This would keep both sides of Users happy being able to choose which is preferred, for example:-

Download Priority (a user toggle switch)

1. Add to back of download queue (do not interrupt current download/queue order)

- or -

2. Add to front of download queue (download most recently added first)

Seriously, I refuse to believe they have actively chosen to write off such a helpful feature.

Because you forgot how things has change after Covid19

And you make cue mistake in time slot schedule, when it suits you then steam can update it.
and you are still not in controll over games you dont play as frequent access files.

ps.
Do understand old ways and users that has a need for know what game updates do, i can respect this, and yet i have seen IT company update things at night with ppl work pc, its from here i and other see a diffrent way now, ( why will i need to see game patch update, thery are not a choise and still same old saying see paint dry on wall, (what a waste of my time )

More and more ppl get this.

mp game patch and single game, is not a choise, its a accept of it or byebye.

And gl say no to a singleplayer game update, and then make bug report to a game devs, they will say update your game , have a nice day.

So where is the part you are in controll here, you are not, and its not your game files, you have a license to play them.

And be happy we bother to try tell you this. ( or you will still think you are in controll )
and we are many games, that install a game and then never return to it, why bother update them.
steam can do that then they see fit. ( within time slot you told them and then steam server has idle time for doing it )

gl understand why its now this way and not because i said so, its a steam choise, not what we think is best.

its help if you have worked with server and understand mass update. to all users.
most gamers here, ( well lets say it as it is they dont know crap here, its server that feed the masses, they are in controll not you/us.

You cant have lets say 1 billion steam user DL same new game that just release, NO ISP in the world can keep up anyway so you see there are many other side issue of this.
steam has also introduce nextdoor neighbour DL, things has change again.

gl with it.

ps.
and steam will never go back to old ways, they got a wake up call what we all other knew in the last 20 years.

covid19 then all was home and dl, that told steam a thing and two ( and steam handle it pretty well, many notice this )

i and other is not steam defender here, but fair is fair , in how they handle it then all was home.

Snipped for brevity.

None of this is relevant to what the OP is talking about. They're not complaining about the late night/days in the future scheduling Steam bought in for Covid. They're talking about Steam prioritising the last game added for download when you're actively using Steam, e.g. when adding demos during one of the Fests it always stops the previous download and starts the next one added.
