How much does Steam Workshop cost game developers?
The community for an open source game is considering applying to Steam Greenlight. That game depends heavilly on Mods and thus Steam Workshop would be a huge benefit. An idea to charge a minimal price for the Steam Version of the game to pay for this cost is being considered. But we would like to know how much Steam Workshop costs the game developers.

I'm fairly sure that Workshop is free, along with all other Steamworks features.

The brochure (although a few years old) would indicate that Steamworks features don't cost anything. However, Coffee Stain have said they charged $10 for Goat Simulator because of the "costs" of implementing Workshop and they would have liked to charge less.

What the truth is, I don't know. This sort of information is kept to the contracts.

Apply to Greenlight first. Worry about it if/when you get through.

There's a ton of information on the SteamWorks website about this, by the way, and forums where people can talk about it. You have to sign up there to apply to Greenlight anyway.

Did it end up costing? Trying to find the same info 8 years later, and it's still scarce. Might just as well take a shot in the dark :p

No, it doesn't cost anything on the Steam service side. But obviously it's not just two lines of code and suddenly a game has a workshop support. It costs (relatively) a lot for a developer to implement workshop features due to development costs for those features. But you don't have to pay anything to Valve to have workshop support

The workshop itself is free to use, but as has been said, implementing it into your game costs time and manhours, which also cost money.
