"The Steam Service on your machine requires some maintenance. This service helps Steam install or update games..."
So today I got this pop-up message:

The Steam Service on your machine requires some maintenance. This service helps Steam install or update games...

Now this is new.

Is this legit?

I had the same issue every time I went to go onto steam. Issue has since been resolved :)

fixed by reinstalling steam ( avast sandbox also reinstalled)

you can actually type in the search bar that is on your taskbar "Services" then click on it, scroll down til find the Steam services, right click on it got to to properties and enable the service. some dumb reason the service disables itself. this fixes the issue, sadly not a permanant fix for it. it has nothing to do with avast etc.. I know this becasue I am a pc tech and builder, deal with this all the time.

For anyone finding this in 2024: My issue was Norton Utilities Ultimate. I noticed that it was the most recent thing I had installed after the "steam service needs maintenance" error started occurring.

Thanks! I've begun using Kaspersky though. However, long before this the problem stopped recurring.

Strangely, for me, this problem stopped as mysteriously as it began. :golem:
