A feature to mark something private that turns itself off without notice is much worse than not having the feature.
You have to remark it as private everytime your Workshop Items update.
The problem are Steam Workshop mods.
If you have Steam Workshop mods or items installed on a "Marked as Private" game and those mods or items get an update, Steam will automatically remove said game fron private.
This happens EVERY time Steam Workshop Items get an update.
Just check the next time when one of your mark as private games has an update.
In any case OP's advice stands, don't trust this feature.
