Games crashes during loading
Hi,

I have rather old PC:
MB Gigabyte GA-B85M-D3H
CPU Intel core i3-4160
RAM 8GB
GPU integrated - Intel HD 4400,
Windows 10

I tested few games and some of them crashes at end of starting game (at the moment when 3D scenario should be displayed. Earlier main menu of game works fine, i can select settings, game mode etc). Setting lowest graphics settings not helps.

Firstly I want to run train Fever - this game was working fine 2 years ago at this PC and have lowest requirements.

I tried:
-install newest gpu drivers
-check files integrity
-clear game cache

Another games that have this same problem with loading but I have not tested it earlier and maybe in this case my PC is too weak.
-Transport Fever
-Need for Speed
-

games that works fine:
-rollercoaster tycoon 3
-Ori and the blind forest
-Rayman legends ( for reference, installed without Steam)
-Euro truck simulator 2
-and many 2D games

Has Anybody some idea what i may check except buying new GPU or new whole PC ?

I have one more observation, Transport fever crash with errror "OpenGL Error File name: bbTree". When I checked OpenGL version then I saw mismatch, in OpenGL Extension Viewer version is 4.3 (the best for my GPU) but in Steam->Help->System Information OpenGL version is 3.2. Driver version in Steam system information is valid.

This last part of your post is the issue but I have not encountered it specifically in which to tell you a solution.

Check this solution and see if it is applicable to you:

GPU integrated - Intel HD 4400, is still not a Nvidia card or AMD Card, and i bet that why you get this issue. ( do note the store info is the clue, but we have seen unoffcial replcement to reduce graphic so it can work somethimes, but we cant go agaient what Game Devs recommend , no matter what fixes there been made , you need to check each game own forum if other has made such.

Even then we are just user here we cant say go for it, its still that game devs rules in what they said in the past. ( and still dont mean such is made for tham games , i have seen it on other older games downgrade and can run with IGPU cards thats been code to tell it can.

You can always use "can i run it" ( google it and i bet they will tell you NO )

Okay, after long research I found out that this Transport Fever game runs on OpenGL and not DX.

Looking at the information above, your system only supports up to DX10.

Probably better off forcing games to run on OpenGL might be best.

OpenGL from version 3.0 and onward are backwards compatible.

You can attempt to force OpenGL Core and check if the game runs especially if it ran in the past.

To force GLCore simply copy/paste this in the Launch Command Line:

-force-glcore

And check if this rectifies issues.

This above command line was a guiding light with one game crashing on startup for me.

You may also try to force DX9:

-force-d3d9

May I also add that iGPU is not that great to be using for Transport Fever.

Thanx for answer. I have mentioned Transport Fever because it fails with some error code that may be helpful. It may be acceptable form me if this game can not run on this GPU, but Train Fever should works fine as earlier. Unfortunately Train Fever crashes without any error information.

I have tried run those games with -force-glcore and with -force-d3d9 but without success.

I have opened "crash_dump" directory for Train Fever, I have no idea how I can read something from dump files, but maybe some helpful information may be found in stdout and stderr files

In stdout file is:

PreventSetUnhandledExceptionFilter: 1

Have you looked in Event Viewer to see if you can find any instances of fault because my thinking is that Steam has OpenGL versions messed up as when I compare my systems, they are all matching Windows and Steam Client with their OpenGL versions.

Train Fever uses the same game engine and OpenGL as their other game.

The shader cache could be at fault, but it is the shader cause if you look at the line, "Verification of `checkTerrain' failed" this is specifically pointing to a shader conflict.

I would research how to properly reset the Steam Client shader cache and see if that helps, or attempt to delete the games shader cache or user cache, Verify Game Integrity, and see if that remedies the issue, but I suspect this is a Steam Client issue.

And you open .dmp files with WinDbg (Windows Debugger or any debugger program) but it says the same exact thing as XML, although you can analyze better.

An interesting troubleshooting method is to install a secondary Steam Client (preferably on a different drive) and check which OpenGL extension is listed.

If there is no OpenGL mismatch, I would then suspect this Steam library/shader cache bug.

I have completely removed and installed again steam but without success - steam still see OpenGL 3.2 and Train Fever still crashes. I will try use WInDbg to open dump files.

OP are you aware that your IGPU is 100%+ lesser gpu calculation then that Nvidia GPU card has as minimum, thats not even Equal in performance, even if you could start the game it will feel awful. not playable, im not so sure all the effort you try to fix with just can start it will be worth it.

Any gamer here that know and felt game lag from any game know this, you will be more angry at ,, its game faulth and game devs, fact is you need a slap here, its your gpu card and things you try run then you dont meet game requirements. ( just wait to friend that can tell you the truth and know how bad thst IGPU card is, if you was my friend i will yell at you, here we say good luck with that idea.

ps.
Dont forget we are not game support here, ask that game support, and they will tell you things you need to know.

Note most games won’t run on Intel let alone the very old Intel HD4400

Ensure it meets the minimum requirements first because there’s a 99% chance it doesn’t

You people really kill me.

They stated this game used to run so it does not matter if it is an iGPU.

Besides Train Fever CAN run on Intel HD.

Perhaps check the game recommendations yourselves next time like I did.

OP, look at the Analysis in the Debugger. This might point to specifics.

Also, did you Google how to reset Steam Client shaders because that IS the issue 100%.

Idk if I told you earlier because all these posts get jumbled together, but run SFC Tool.

Always first thing to ever do is run SFC as it fixes Windows fairly well.

[Revised Edit]

Found a possible fix from the developers:

Summary of the fix from Steam User/Train Fever Developer "sponsz":

"sounds like a different issue (since you can't start the game at all). Can you try to delete the file "settings.lua" and the directory "texture_cache" from your userdata folder (usually something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\{your user id}\304730\local)?"

They mention textures so this, imo, could be a very highly possible fix as you have the same shader/render issue.

If this solution does work, we can chalk it up to a game error not Steam Client error.

the age of your pc suggests that you upgraded to windows 10. windows 10 limits what version of opengl you can use. the hardware suggests that you updated from windows 8, which supports a newer version of opengl than windows 10 does. there is still hope. you can buy a graphics card, which should solve the problem. i am unable to think of any other solutions.

The system requirements for the game Transport Fever:

Minimum:
Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS *: Windows 7, 8 or 10 (64bit)
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260, ATI Radeon HD 5670, 1 GB VRAM
Storage: 12 GB available space

The Intel HD4400 does not meet those.
https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-260-vs-Intel-HD-4400-Desktop-115-GHz/3160vsm8064
Not even close.
Even if the game would start, it would be unplayable.

OP is talking about Train Fever.

{MINIMUM:
OS *: Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 8800 512 MB, ATI Radeon HD 3850 512 MB
Additional Notes: Mouse with wheel

* Starting January 1st, 2024, the Steam Client will only support Windows 10 and later versions.}

I got confused also... 🙃

I ran this game and it compresses textures heavily at boot. So the developers fix will work 99.99% of the time.

Train Fever uses OpenGL 3.2 at the least and supported to 4.6

Thats why we stick to what game devs/pub once said as game requirement.

Not emulated or other edit and ways, ( because i have seen games work fine in the begining of game and later it crash for lack or resources ) its here, you can end up with gamers get angry at you, for things not working and game devs can only say report them to steam for promish a game will work then it dont.

But game devs do not do this they just close the ticket with we cant help you then you dont meet game requirements, and rest is steam problem. and they might not be nice to you if gamers keep report you for things that dont work.

Do note it has nothing to do with us and you Cosa Nostra, its OP that dont have game spec.
but ppl might forget that in the debat sometimes.

and it dont matter if game devs optimize game or edit own game requirements they are in controll over it we are not, even that is seen before. they have every right to audit own info.
we other can only adjust to what they mean here and now at store page, game requirement info.

just like the other user above point out why dont he buy a better gpu card, ( most will have done that then that pc was new and hot. )

Okay, I am not sure when exactly I did upgrade from win8 to win 10 so I can't say that Train Fever had worked after upgrade.... maybe it is a reason. In this situation I agree that only one solution is to buy new GPU ( downgrade to win8 is not a solution ;) ) especially that I have some games that really need them. In conclusion, thank you very much for your time and ideas.
I will return if new GPU will not help ;)
