How can I restore Steam partially downloaded game file?

I was downloading a game and was up to ~40 GB when I accidentally closed it. Now when I go to resume the download it starts from the beginning. How can I restore the download to the previous state?

The system needs to validate those files before continuing.

After the validation the progress bar says 1% how do I get it to recognize the files in the downloading file of steam?

What game are you talking about?
What did you close and how?

When a game download stops for whatever reason and then gets a update/patch at around the same time, the download will start from zero again since the server tells the client the already downloaded partial files are outdated. Has been that way forever. Sucks but not much you can do.
