Says I'm in New York when I try and log into my account
I don't live in New York. Every time I try and log into my account and I check my email for a security code, it says someone is attempting to log in from New York. I've scanned my PC for malware, changed my password like 5 times over, changed my email linked to the account, and it still says someone is attempting to log in from New York.
Weird thing is that it doesn't say there's a log in attempt from the state I live in when I attempt to log in, and this email is sent the moment I attempt to log in. I have my account region set to my own state, so is this some weird bug? I'm almost positive this isn't an account breach since it should be nearly impossible for this same person to somehow still be able to access it.

Where are you then? You never mentioned your state. Also i assume you're in the United States?

North Carolina. Didn't wanna reveal that in this but I guess the info isn't too personal.

Also if this adds any additional context, I've only been to New York once after creating my steam account, and I was only there for half a day. My laptop that I had Steam on was either shut down or on airplane mode, and I never used it once while in NY. Don't think it should've automatically updated my location based on that one day.

IP geolocation is notoriously inaccurate. The example I often use also involves New York.

I posted on Facebook once from my favourite cinema in Liverpool here in the UK. The post was fine, showed the correct location and everything. I checked the login data a few days later and it said that I'd logged in from New York. It was definitely that post though - date and timestamps matched.

Your connection can and will be routed all over the world depending on which route is the cheapest for your provider and the companies providing the route. Now, I'd imagine if that route included a VPN server somewhere then your geolocation info would certainly be totally fragged.

if you using VPN, then disable it completely.

My IP address provided by my ISP is reported as being 300 miles from where I actually am. It's basically a case of be aware but not paranoid about these things.

Either it accurate, or not, it's basically finicky really as depending where someone live can be very inaccurate.

Just something to note, never login via 3rd party sites, example if anyone contact you saying vote for their team, claim to be support, claim you won something, said they mistakenly reported you, or etc those are scams, and links they provide to you would be scam sites.

If ever try use Steam login method from any 3rd party site, just go to steam directly, login, then come back to 3rd party site, and try use their login method, it shouldn't be asking you to enter anything, it should only be showing you just one button that say sign in as well showing your profile on the page that it, there no texr field at all. If want an example use steamdb.info hope this clears any issues in the future.

Here screenshot of example I refer of how Steam sign in method should be.

Here an example of scam site where it asks for login info despite already login from steam.

Sorry, but I’m going to make the following assumption in case this doesn’t resolve your login issue. Normally, if you use your phone to sign in while it's connected to a VPN, but your computer is not, the sign-in attempt will appear to come from the VPN location on your phone, especially if you used the scan login for 2-factor authentication. If this isn’t the case, I’m unsure of the cause. If you don’t have a VPN, it’s possible that your provider is automatically routing your traffic through one.
