How can I can I get steam to recognize partially downloaded game file?

I was downloading a game and was up to ~40 GB when I accidentally closed it. Now when I go to resume the download it starts from the beginning. I have the partially downloaded files but I do not know how to get Steam to recognize it. How can I do this?

If Steam doesn't recognize the files, you can't force it to. It either does or doesn't. If it doesn't it means something happen. Either the files are corrupted or there was an update to the depot that now doesn't match the files you have.
