Can someone tell me how to cast my Steam games on PC to my TV?
I have an nvidia shield and a chromecast and somehow can never get them to work.

PC specs windows 10 PRO 64x 8700k 2080ti 32Gb

I tried several internet guides and none of them work.

Can you run an HDMI cable between your PC and TV?

I can yes, last time I tried it didn't work either, and it would be mirroring at most no?

Streaming over the network will be mirroring as well. Replacing mirroring with mirroring-with-extra-steps isn't a win. We can talk about that "didn't work either" part, if you like.

I was expecting being able to cast, like I cast a tab on my computer and can keep on using the PC. Ideally.

Mirroring is not as great, but I could work with that at least. I think last time I tried there was a massive lag in the image and on inputting controls. I don't know if I need a cable with a certain grade or quality for it to be possible.

That's not entirely impossible, requires you to jump through a lot of additional hoops. You'll need to set up a virtual machine to use as a game streaming sever and pass your GPU through to it for 3D rendering. This can be done by the means of GPU partitioning or dedicating the whole of the GPU to the VM.

Not impossible, does take some work though. The folks over @ thute streaming forum have been talking about such soluons for a while. Alternatively, I can dig out out some documentation for you. The question is whether you want to undertake all the work required.

Do you?

If I had more time I would experiment with this stuff myself, but real life gets in the way all the time leaving little time. But my experience with virtual boxes is that they are very frustrating to set and run super slow.

I just want to find a way for my kids to have the steam paw patrol games on the TV.
So HDMI it is. Plug it in. Don't mirror, extend. Set the TV as the primary display, the other monitor as secondary. Report results.
