Steam Game Update gets stuck at "Patching" 5MB/sec Disk Usage
I have an issue in which lately when I download updates to my steam games, the download will go fast 80-90MB/sec. But after the files are downloaded, the disk write speed is stuck at around 5MB/sec. I decided to uninstall the game (BF 2042) and just reinstall it. The reinstall is taking way less time than just a small patch to the game. My disk usage/write speed right now reinstalling the game is over 100MB/sec so I know my drive is good.

How do I fix the issues around installing patches as I don't want to keep having to uninstall every time a new patch comes out?

Patches work like this

1) steam downloads the patch file
2) steam reads this patch file
3) steam calculates what the new file should look like
4) steam reads the original file
5) steam writes out the new file

Your patching speeds are going to be limited by

1) your CPU
2) your disk IO
3) your anti-virus

By and large #3 is the one that kills the performance of patching significantly.
