"Choppy" downloads + installs
"Choppy" downloads + installs
Hello everyone, I have a problem with the client for a few months now:

The download is going up fast to 600+ MB/s and after 5-10 seconds it slows down to 0.
The install progress (SDD) does the same.
Then it stays at ~0 for 30-60 seconds and after that, it goes up again.

What I've done so far:

- deactivated Windows firewall
- reinstalled the client
- changed region
- deleted download cache

Any chance, someone knows a fix? :steamthis:

OS: Windows 11

Steam is very I/O intensive - it downloads encrypted and compressed diff chunks, decrypts them, then decompresses them. Thenafter, Steam stores a backup copy of the file pre-patch before applying the diff (creating another file), then deletes the backup copy.

Download speed is limited by:

* Your storage device's I/O capabilities
* Your CPU
* Your antivirus or other ring 0 kernel driver's (Firewall, device drivers, anti-cheats, ...) I/O efficiency
* Your ISP's peering agreements and infrastructure. (Especially if it's a double paid carrier, see here[web.archive.org] for more information about the economical politics from which not only Hetzner suffered/suffers)

Pick one or multiple.

write behind cache on SSD , laptop with balance mode also reduse I/O disk performance.

I know Ettanin know this is been mention so many times in other steam post, problem is so many things can do this, we have seen server ppl think they have a gaming pc, so even CPU power will be a issue and that why he starts with the basic. ( problem is most hardcore gamers if we can call experience gamers that, know this a gameing pc is actual the right build that try have all aspect of what a pc most have.

"Then it stays at ~0 for 30-60 seconds and after that, it goes up again."
this is the proof.

yes i can be rude to say work as intended or the way you pc is and the setup it do, you fail to understanbd what you are doing.

your pc buffer data up and your pc cant handle it fast enough, and thats why many turn off sdd write behind cache.

Turned write cache off on my hard drive as it was supposed to help with downloads from Steam but instead it has made things worse. Not only did it not help with Steam but it made my overall experience using my pc worse.

TBH I don't know what you are trying to say, but for what I've read in your post, I turned off write cache on all SSD/HDD.

--> Didn't help, problem is still there.

Maybe I understood you wrong, I really appreciate every try to help me with my problem.

My hardware is:
Windows 11
i9-9900K @ 3.6 GHz
32GB RAM 3600 MHz
Board: ROG STRIX Z390-F Gaming
