Steam window resizing itself.
I have my client set to a full size window, yet for the last 2 months or so (I don't remember exactly when it started) it keeps making itself slightly bigger than that...

I.e: the gap between the Home button (beneath the STORE and LIBRARY buttons) on the Library screen and the edge of the window disappears, and the gap between the drop-down menu buttons at the top and the top edge of the window is roughly halved.

Basically, the window grows by a few millimetres in all directions for some bizarre reason.

It happens every time I open it and after a seemingly random amount of time, even when I change it back, it'll do it again.

Anyone else having this issue?

The desktop is 1920x1080 (the monitors native resolution), the Nvidia driver is 537.58, and I'm using Windows 10.

YES! this has been happening for a few weeks now.

EDIT - I just figured it out. It happens when the wallpaper on my desktop changes. I use 4k wallpaper on a 1440p monitor. Maybe that's why? Going to experiment and see.

EDIT 2 - In windows, under Personalization, I made the accent color manual. My background color was already manual, and my images were already set to Fit. This appears to have fixed things for now.

kindly don't go install programs that manages your Windows Settings.

the problems your having especially like what OP is having is due to those type of programs.

Nope, I have nothing like that on my system at all.

It's a gaming PC, so it's been caused by either a Windows update or a Steam update as nothing else has been updated in months asides from the GFX driver but I'm almost 100% sure it was doing it before that.

And I have nothing else running in the background while I'm using Steam.

@Glut Pls:
I think you may be right. It just did it again and the wallpaper had changed.
And my accent colour is set to auto and the wallpaper is set to fill (although all my wallpapers are the same size as the desktop).

I've set the background to a single picture instead of a slideshow to see if that fixes it.

there are programs that controls In-Game Settings and Computer Settings.

saying that there isn't any on your computer at all OP seems to me like a lie in itself.

-------------------------------------------------------

i know for a fact that any problems that occurs on your Windows Desktop, is caused by 3rd party programs that overwrite your own MANUAL SETTINGS.

it is not caused by Gaming Platforms at all.

I realise that but I know what's installed on my system and none of it automatically changes my desktop settings (FWIW, it's not a pre-built system full of manufacturer bloatware).

Just because you might use software like that doesn't mean I do

And if my manual settings are being overwritten (which they're not), why is it only affecting Steam and nothing else?

You don't need to set it to a single picture. Just make sure the accent color is manual, and maybe the background color too. I haven't had the resizing issue since I made the accent color adjustment. I still run a slideshow for my backgrounds.
GrumpySoldier 24. feb. 2024 kl. 22.15
Yeah, you're right. I'd set it to a single picture (still with the automatic accent colour switched on) and it stopped doing it so I thought that must've been the issue.

Tried going back to the slideshow after I switched the automatic accent colour off and it hasn't done it since.

Good job picking up on that, I'll contact Steam support about it and see what they say.

"Unfortunately, we still do not have a fix for you at this time."

Ah well, at least they know about it and what's causing it now. Hopefully they find a fix for it.

Oh perfect! Thanks for contacting them.

I second this issue. Any time you either manually or automatically change the accent colour, the window changes as you've said.
It does not appear to change size if the window is not maximized, but manually stretched to the edges of the screen (tip!).

Discord has the exact same problem and also resizes with change of accent colour.
Discord and Steam both have non-standard window frames which I suspect is part of the issue, and that it is ultimately a Windows problem (I'm using Windows 10).

BTW thanks for finding the cause, this has been happening for maybe ever since I turned on automatic accent colour years ago and I always thought Microsoft was maliciously screwing with Steam, haha.
GrumpySoldier 13. juli 2024 kl. 3.12
Yeah, I just tried it and you're right.
Must be a clash between the non-standard frame's code when it's maximized and the process managing the desktop.

No worries, it was annoying me for ages before I decided to fix it yet when I searched for a solution, I found nothing.
I'm surprised I had to make a thread about it considering you'd think it'd affect most W10 PC's.

I was going to give your comment a clown award, but you aren't worth the points.

I'm testing turning off GPU acceleration as I read that was the fix on Reddit for someone - he had a static image as background and it seemed to work.
You mean the hardware-acceleration setting in Windows System>Display>Graphics Settings, or the one in Steam>Interface?

I just stretched the window to fill the screen, as mentioned a few posts above, which enabled me to switch the accent colour back to auto and the slideshow back on without it happening again.

Another steam post mention "enter small mode," then flip back at "large mode", don't remember if this is exattly same issue but let's see if it help here also with steam. viewing issue.
