Steam not checking for ANY updates while game is running.

Is it just my problem, or are you experiencing this too?
Or is it, God forbid, some new "feature"?

EDIT: I mean not checking for updates for ANY games, not just the one I am running right now. I have to shut it down to make Steam check for updates. This is just bad.
