Windows Defender isn't a complete security package, it only deals with the latest/common virus definitions to stop mass spreading. It's overall security rating is however 0.5 out of 5.
Where as Norton and Mcafee at least get 4-4.5 out of 5 in security. They use to be memory and resource hogs, however have got extremely better in 2016 (just still with a bad rep).
If you want both good security and performance, then consider application control rather than relying just on virus definitions. Kaspersky Internet Security, for example, would give overall protection with good performance.

(sort by protection and performance)
That's a joke - the Windows firewall can easily be bypassed and allows almost anything and everyone. It's a false sense of security.
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool will just help get rid of some major infections, but nothing stealth. Nor prevent it from being infected in the first place.
Take a real firewall or router firewall, you can see and monitor it's activities. You can block more port scans and sniffers, not just the kiddie script basics.
However I will agree, virus definitions and firewall isn't really cutting it either at an automatic level. Application control is where it's at, I personally perfer something which gives me all the control. If you have full control over what that application is allowed and not allowed to do. So long you have an understanding of yes that's fine traffic, but hmm what is this trying to install and call back to IP Address. Trace the IP Address, then block if fishy.
