Need to know if my computer is ok for playing games

I'm not exactly great with computers but would like to know if mine is good for running games.
system specs are:
Processor: intel core i7 up to 3.5 ghz
RAM: 8gb of RAM
Video card 1:NVIDIA GeForce 840M
Video card 2:Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600

As someone who has the 940m in my laptop. I can say you'll be able to run almost everything if you're willing to go down to 720p. The exact settings will vary game to game, and will depend what framerate you wanna play at. In my laptop I have and i7 5500u (which is a dual core, yours is a qaud) and a 940m (which has essentially the same performance as a 840m) and I've been able to run all of my games, even the more demanding ones, at at least 30 fps.

How can i change to 720p? Do i just do that in game? Sorry thats probably a really dumb question. I'm just alittle new to this

In most cases, you can change it from the game. If not, try setting the launch properties. Right click the game in your library -> Properties -> SET LAUNCH OPTIONS... -> Add the text:

-w 1280 -h 720

Yep, in game graphics settings. Just play around a bit with the settings, you can find what works best for you. However, if there is a game you wanna buy, I'd reccomend to try and find a video of someone playing it with your video card so you can get an idea of how the game will run, as yours (and mine) is technically under minimum spec for many new games. That said, Steam also has a refund system so if it doesnt run well you can probably get a refund.
