OP clearly said he tried to Opt-in into the Beta (Game > Properties > Beta's > Opt-in)
That version USED to be a testversion for Linux and Windows versions of the games with small improvements and changing the pipeline for the workshop. That's the only difference between the Beta and the normal version a while ago.
This beta is now obsolete, until new features are added or tested. (And results from this beta has been added to the current version of the game (regular)
The Leaked beta was leaked PRIOR to the release of Half Life 2, and people had to download this version outside of steam. It's not like Steam let people play the Beta before it was released back in 2004.
