Activating Halo on Steam from Xbox disc
Hey all, I realize this is a long shot, but now that Halo is offered on Steam, is there any way to get the game for free using the key from the Xbox 360 disc? Usually there's no way to transfer games between consoles/accounts, but I was hoping that the collaboration between Microsoft and Steam would have added some way to convert ownership of the original game over to my Steam account.

Well, for starters Xbox 360 games don't have CD keys unless it's a digital download.

You cannot claim a free copy of Halo if you own the 360 version. But if you have a few dollars to spare you can get a month of Game Pass Ultimate for $1/£1 and play it through the Xbox app on Windows 10.

Read this for all of the details on this subject:

It's possible to register a game you own and have a key for on Steam but not all of them are accepted by steam. The ones that are accepted and how they're accepted or why a key you have might get denied or say it's invalid are explained at the link above.

At the top of the steam client window click on Games > Activate a Product on Steam...

IF it is an accepted game that outside key registrations work for, depending on the game, it may or may not save your progress that you have on another platform or locally on your pc from the disk installation. It will install the Steam version and might be separate.

For games you do this with be sure to read details of any workshop or DLC items you want to buy for it. In most cases DLC available only on steam and workshop items only work on the steam version. Read the text on the store pages. They will warn / tell you whether the DLC works with stand-alone installations or steam only.

Too many people make the lazy mistake of not reading the store page text. And I've seen people complain that after they registered a product key on to steam "My stuff isn't there! I have to start all over!"

It's a different installation. Your stuff might not be carried over to the steam version of it if you have modifications in your stand-alone version. You'll have to manually install 3rd party mods not available on steam to the steam version for them to work, if they're compatible. They might not be compatible. Please be aware of these things.

You bought a 360 version, not a Steam version. If you want the Steam version, either buy it in the Steam store or send Microsoft an email asking them to provide you one. You are not owed a Steam version.

Also take note that there is no collaboration between Steam and Microsoft. Like any other publisher, Microsoft puts games on the Steam store.

"On PC, the Halo: Master Chief Collection (Halo: MCC) is launching on the Microsoft Store as well as Steam. As per the information on the Steam page for the game, it will require an Xbox Live account. Thankfully, players will not need Xbox Live Gold based on the above rule. All you'll have to do is connect a free Xbox Live account to your game, and you'll be good to go."
