At best you can install the first copy, then move it to another location as a backup, then install the game again and switch between the two by moving the folders back and forth.
But you cant have two separate active installations of the same game with the same Steam account and on the same machine.
"Some of the items" -- both installations will use the same savefiles anyway.

That’s not always the case. In addition to save files, verifying integrity of game files will not restore ini files to their initial settings, nor restore altered scripts, textures, models, (such as might be done by a mod) if the file containing the affected records still exists. Verifying files can help in certain situations, especially with certain games or engines, but there’s no guarantee. Oftentimes a fresh install might be the only way to resolve issues.
