Besides that I've only seen the 1 year thing when downloading patches for already installed games on my HDD, never on a new download. Uninstalling and reinstalling was quicker.
With the SSD I never see the 1 year thing, so if you're installing to a HDD and have a SSD in your system I'd suggest installing to the SSD and then using the move function to move across to the HDD.
My understanding is it's caused by the way Steam compresses games as they need to be unpacked for install, which can be affecrted by the speed of the components in your PC.
