Firewall Steam
Basically my steam wont open if my firewall is on and even though I added it on the exceptions but when I temporarily disable it, my steam works just fine? Also is it fine if i keep my firewall down or does it help me against like hacks or viruses.

Windows' got a built-in firewall which does a fine job @ what firewalls are good at.
Rule number one with firewalls, do not disable them..... for something.
If you want one that controls outgoing, let it ask if it blocks something. Or look in the logs what was blocked.

If you are carefull with what you put on your computer, the windows firewall is fine in win 10.

Make sure you didn't add Steam, or automatically applied by firewall you're using to being blocked for any of it processing, and protocols.

If you had added it to whitelist, but if it also added to black list the blacklist may take priority over the whitelist, so remove it from blacklist if you see it being blacklisted.

Well by default it shouldn't be blocking unless you added it to blacklist, or use some app to alter it for you to which it added steam to block list, or if you had got a pop up, and asked you if want to allow you mistakenly click block on it.

So open control panel > Click on System and Security > Click on Windows Defender Firewall > click on Allow an app or feature through the firewall > go down the whole list to ensure steam isn't being block there, want checkbox for it, then click ok, if don't see steam there add it.

I did this and clicked ok and when I check it after there's another steam checkbox that appears that isnt checked. I also tried checking the new checkbox and there's another one that appears again.

Windows firewall asks at most one question for a thing.
It does not block outbound. So most things should even run online if you click nothing.

What changes did you make prior to this?

I dont recall changing anything but suddenly my steam stopped working then I thought steam was just down and it went on for weeks.

My steam is fixed now, I just kept turning off and on the firewall and now it works with the firewall on. Thanks everyone

I have a related question, I’m trying to help my buddy with a solid answer… he’s trying to play a few multiplayer games and get random coop invites. I sort of recommended port forwarding but he thinks firewall in Windows 11 is applying block rules to one steam game only (which uses easy anti-cheat, fwiw) Basically he said it seems like there’s rarely (maybe none?) any activity and he looked into a few things. According to in game menus, he’s in online mode fine etc.

He’s saying he went to Windows Firewall advanced and in inbound rules, every game except the one he’s concerned about says “allow.” But the rule for this game is “block” on private and public profile.

Under the basic settings>windows security>firewall>allow an app through firewall steam is on there, as is this and every other steam game.

I’m not super clear on the inbound outbound rules for the game specifically, but 1) if steam itself and the rest of the library is on “allow,” would this supercede the “advanced” inbound block rule? And 2) would this “block” inbound prevent coop multiplayer, even if every other indicator is saying it’s available? Trying to troubleshoot if it’s a rules or port/NAT type issue.

He’s kinda paranoid (doesn’t mind me saying so) so he wanted to not have his profile associated with the question lol. Thanks in advance!

Which game is it?

The game with the “block” is Elden Ring, which I believe uses easy anti cheat? I mostly played it on XSX with open and moderate NAT type, had no issues

It should work with windows firewall.
Maybe you misclicked when firewall asked about it?

Apart from that set it like other similar games were set in windows firewall

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
