You don't want to be running the game and then go over the refund policy limit of two hours played meaning you potentially wont be able to secure a refund .
If one isn't prepared to troubleshoot, they should probably just stick to console gaming.

Since it hasn't had an update in over a year, it's probably some kind of Nvidia driver update that broke something with this particular game. I don't see anyone with AMD hardware complaining about crashing.
There's a "Darek" guy in the Days Gone forum that really likes to share his troubleshooting guide. It actually seems pretty well written and comprehensive. Worth a shot.

You need to go with manual refund:
Help > Purchases > click on game > "i've question about ..." > fill contact form
Be polite; describe your problem; specify that the reason why you've exceeded allowed time was attempt to troubleshoot, tell them that you would like to ask about possibility of refund, if you paid with card - specify where exactly they should refund it (otherwise it'll go to steam wallet).
Whatever decision you will get, will be final one.
