Question about rockstar games cloud saves
My understanding is that GTA 4 and GTA 5 do not support Steam cloud saves so I’ve been trying to figure out how to back up my local saves. I moved the files to an SD card and wanted to test out that the backup will work so I reinstalled both and to my surprise the game boots straight into my saved game without moving the save file back into the game files. My question is this: are the single player saves now supporting cloud saves? There’s no other explanation for what I experienced.

Was it the same computer? If yes, then you only moved the game files back and forth and never touched the savegame files in any way.

You can find your GTA V savegame in:
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V\Profiles

GTA IV stores its savegame in:
"%LocalAppData%\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames\user_XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX\" folder where XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX is a 16-character string tied to the user's Games for Windows Live account.

If you want to save them a bit more automated:

They likely use the Rockstar Launcher/Social Club to handle their cloud saves.

Yes it was the same PC. I copied both save games onto the SD card. Uninstalled both, then installed them again and launched straight in without moving anything back and it brought me straight back to my save game. So somehow it was able to reinstate the save game without me needing to back it up. I tried looking on my Rockstar account but there's no information about my saves on there.

That was my assumption however I couldn't see anyone confirming this on previous discussions or on Reddit. Everyone was saving that the data is only saved locally, unless something has changed.

It seems it has.

Keep in mind that your multiplayer progress is always saved on the Rockstar servers, not locally.

That's great, thanks. I'm a bit confused why no one else knew about this when I was searching the forums. It appears it's the same for GTA 4 also then.

Can't find a support article for GTA IV cloud saves.
