Playing co-op multiplayer without Remote Play?

Hi, I am trying to find out how to play a game with a friend and when I search the only info I can find is about Remote Play. I don't want to do remote play as I'm not sure either my computer or the internet connection can support that. The game says it supports multiplayer co-op. But how do you actually do it?

In that case Remote Play Together is not even an option.
Just use the multiplayer mode provided within the game.
All players must own their own copy of that game on their own account.

OK, that's cool, appreciate it. But how will I do it, from within the game itself? Do I have to invite my friend?
