Why are my downloads on steam so slow when every other launcher is as it should be?
For some reason my download speeds on steam are painfully slow when my download speed is quite fast in general on other platforms. I’m getting average 89mbps download speeds when my actual speed should be ~500mbps. I know it is a steam issue as on any other video game launcher (I.e. epic games, EA app, battle.net) my download speeds are accurate to what they should be. My downloads start at about 400mbps but then starts to gradually go down and then drops to 0 and then rarely goes above 89 after dropping to 0 so I know it’s not that I’ve got a limit on my speed in the settings. I have tried common troubleshooting methods like clearing download cache, flushing DNS, uncapping download limit, uninstalling and reinstalling steam and more. I’m not sure what to do at this point as I’m sure anyone can understand how frustrating it can be for games to download at inconsistent speeds not knowing how long you’ll have to wait because the estimated time is always changing. If anyone can help I’ll be so thankful.

Steam is very I/O intensive - it downloads encrypted and compressed diff chunks, decrypts them, then decompresses them. Thenafter, Steam stores a backup copy of the file pre-patch before applying the diff (creating another file), then deletes the backup copy.

Download speed is limited by:

* Your storage device's I/O capabilities
* Your CPU
* Your antivirus or other ring 0 kernel driver's (Firewall, device drivers, anti-cheats, ...) I/O efficiency
* Your ISP's peering agreements and infrastructure.

Pick one or multiple.
