i9 13900k reaches over 100 degrees when gaming?
I play mostly single player games at 1080p. I got a new 13900k with a thermaltake th360 water cooler and it's reaching over 100 degrees.

I called the store that sold it to me and they said this is normal? Is this true?

100 degree is WAY too high for that CPU and far outside the safety zone.
Could seriously damage the CPU.
I suspect a loose or false sitting cooler or similar or something wrong with the water cooling flow.
That the store who sold you said its "normal" is borderline criminal and seems very suspect.

Thanks for the input. Yeah we use degrees C over here.

It idles at 40-50c but reaches 100c when gaming

There is literally no cooler that can tame this CPU as the contact surface is too small for the necessary thermal transfer.
Intel literally made it impossible to fully utilize the full potential of that CPU.

Yeah thats too high, especially if you use water cooling.
Does it reach the high temps gradually or nearly instant?
If it takes a bit to get so high it could be something with the water flow thats not right and it gets too hot over time.
If it gets that hot right away it points more into a wrong sitting cooler on the CPU or similar.

In either cases the store who sold you the system is responsible to make sure its running cool enough so your CPU is not in danger of getting damaged.
I would call them again and tell them that 100 degree is obviously not "fine" if the danger limit for that CPU is at 85 degree.
They are obligated to fix this as the seller.

Also using a CPU like this at 1080p seems like a bad idea, that leads to insane high load because the CPU will far outpace the GPU.
Maybe consider using Vsync to limit your FPS to the max monitor refresh rate, that could already help with the high temperatures a bit.

Im seriously bothered by the fact the guy told me 100c is fine.
Peeratat 26/dez./2023 às 4:36
Not going to be able to sleep tonight unless I do something about this.

It gets hot pretty fast.

The refresh rate is 360hz so I never really reach that.

I've got a feeling you will have to undervolt this CPU. You will probably be able to get very specific advice from others in the same predicament at /r/intel.

Yikes, a 360hz monitor?
Thats pretty extreme.

Way too high on idle and during gaming.
They either forgot to put thermal paste on CPU or colling unit is faulty.

Yeah, especially that they just say " its normal" when asked about it is very suspect.

In fairness, it is a notoriously problematic CPU to cool for the reason Cathulhu gave above. Most users only get it down to 92C ish (when gaming) with top of the line cooling AND undervolting.

TJ Max is 100°C according to this[www.techpowerup.com] but I wouldn't be happy with it actually hitting that every time I play a game.

The fans seem to be spinning only at 500rpm. Maybe this is the issue?
