Does the new steamlink vr works over the internet (not in LAN)?
Hello I have a cloud gaming machine and I absolutely hate VRDresktop from that Guy Godin.

Now this new steamlink vr seems a godsend to get rid of that spaghetti code.
Does it works over the internet or is just to stream in your LAN?

I see also this
https://store.steampowered.com/remoteplay#:~:text=Available%20on%20Meta%20Quest%20headsets!&text=Steam%20Link%20with%20Remote%20Play,gaming%20PC%20to%20another%20device.

But is it a separate thing?
Anyone can help me understand how to set up, if possible, the thing?
It's just a matter of installing the app and I'm done?

SteamLink VR is designed for LAN use only. You could in theory circumvent that with a VPN connection, but you need a low latency and VERY FAST connection to make this even remotely viable if at all possible.

Then what is the whole thing advertised in the link given?
The vpn solution is not an option, it wil furthwr slow down the whole thing.

But that page clearly SAYS you can play remotely any game, including VR, by using steam link

And here they say any games supporte remote play (not remote play togheter, which is another thing):

"Stream the games you love in your Steam library directly from your computer to compatible VR headsets. Using the power of your computer, Steam Link delivers a high-fidelity and intuitive way to wirelessly play your favorite games, discuss them with your friends, and access your desktop apps."
Clearly not advertised as playing from everywhere.

Additionally:
"Minimum Requirements

A computer running Steam and SteamVR
Supported OS: Windows 10 or newer
Computer GPUs: NVIDIA (GTX970 or better)
Wireless Router: 5GHz Channel, Wi-Fi 5
A wired connection between your PC and your router
Headset: Meta Quest 2, 3, or Pro

* Remote Play Together is not supported for VR"

I think we are either reading different texts or someone has problems writing or reading.

1.
"Stream the games you love in your Steam library directly from your computer to compatible VR headsets. Using the power of your computer, Steam Link delivers a high-fidelity and intuitive way to wirelessly play your favorite games, discuss them with your friends, and access your desktop apps."

This simply says your computer (wether is remote in another nation or in your home) can be streamed anywhere thanks to steamlink or any *compatible* headset, which only means you either need a meta quest or valve index or whatever theys upport.

They reinforce it saying that you can wirelessly play your games/apps from anywhere.
There is no mention at all that you are forced to be in the same LAN.

2.

This furtther reinforces the thing said at point 1. You just need a computer running steam and it can be anywhere.

As for the other requirements, I meet all of the, including the vr headset.

The only gotcha is that remote play TOGHETER doesn't work on VR.

That's what the whole page says.

Then, if they have purposefully made word juggling to not say you specifically need to be on a LAN, then it's not my fault and I would be very sad about it.

"Getting Started

1. Turn on your home PC, launch Steam, and log in.
2. Ensure your Meta Quest headset is connected to the same network as your host PC.
3. Download and install the Steam Link app from the Meta Quest store in your headset. You can also download from the Meta Quest app on your phone.
4. After you’ve installed Steam Link, open it and follow the on-screen instructions for connecting your headset to your home PC."

I think it's outdated and they don't care.

Those reddit threads are over half a year old and do not cover SteamLink VR.

Well, yes, but there shouldn't be much difference between the normal and VR version unless we talk about remote play togheter
Cathulhu Dec 13, 2023 @ 5:00am
There is a lot higher bandwidth requirements to supply two images at higher than fullHD resolution compared to a normal SteamLink connection.

That doesn't take out the fact that it should work?
Cathulhu Dec 13, 2023 @ 9:07am
As i said, it would require a low latency and very high bandwidth connection.

And a VPN bridged tunnel to make the hardware think it's on the same network as the host PC.

Well, I'll have to try, I don't think it's impossible without a VPN from what I've read around

Make sure whatever you read actually refers to SteamLink VR and not Steam Remote Play.

Well, thanks for the discussion.
In any case I have VRDesktop even if I despise it, so I'm covered.
But I will give a try to it as soon as I get my hands on the quest 3

I would think Tailscale on both should get it working, not sure if latency is good enough however.
