Find steam account using activation key
Hello,

A few years I ago I purchased retail game key and activated it. But at that time I had older account which I dont remember username or password to. Is there any way, I can find my old account using game activation key that I used on that account?

Thanks.

you need to have access to the email for that account. you simply re enter the code, it comes back as Duplicate code, then you click the option to send a notice to that accounts email that the code was activated on. you will at least have something to start with when recovering the account.

after that, you can try to recover the account.

Account Recovery
Make sure you are completely logged out of Steam before you start the recovery process

When doing an account recovery, do not try to rush thru the process. Trying to rush thru normally results information being missend and time wasted. Take your time and read everything.

Here is a guide that another Steam user was kind enough to make. It will help you navigate your way thru the recovery process if you are having any problems.

I tried it, but when I entered the code it showed up as duplicate but gave me no options. Only to try again. I did it in Steam cllient.

Yeah, Steam sometimes removes options that they consider to be too useful.

Maybe ask support whether you can find the account for your key.

My guess, it were too easy to exploit.
Post some keys online, wait for others to activate them on their accounts and use those keys to get information/access of the victims.

@Unknown: any old emails?

That's not how it worked.

Like other systems that do this kind of stuff, they were sending an EMail to the account that redeemed the key.

So, while it's dubious what kind of "information" you expect them to get out of this process, especially information that's worth the game keys -- they did not getting out of it, because they would either redeem the keys for themselves (if the recipient hasn't done so before), or an EMail would be sent to the account that redeemed the key -- not to the account making the query.

It's the same thing that happens when you click "forgot password" on most sites -- you enter your EMail address, and it sends information straight to that EMail. If it's not in fact YOUR email, then somebody else will get the information, not you.
Which is why these mails usually include phrases like "if you did not request ... then you can safely ignore this EMail".
