How to play fps games with a controller? (xbox360 wired/wireless)

Hi I recently bought MW2 do to the fact that I really missed it, I was excited to play and bought an xbox 360 wired controller to play it with. Then it just didn't work.. I have ask people that play it (inside the game) and they are able to play with it, but never got a chance to ask them how they did it.
Can someone tell me what do I have to download or do to play!

Shinogekai, The controller works fine with the Big Picture Mode but when I load the game it just doesn't move at all! (I have Windows 8)

MW2 does not have controller support, but you can download software so you can play the game with a controller.
