Validating files deletes them
It's painfull to download games at 146 kB/s, so i sometimes ask my friend for help, which is to download game on his PC, copy the files to USB stick or other kind of external drive, and then to steam library on my PC. It used be as easy as placing game files in proper steam folder and clicking download in library and waiting a minute for steam to notice he has all the files and can start up the game, but now when i do so steam starts validating the files and deleting every single file i placed there. Is there any way i can make this sort of thing work again?

You need the game folder with the files, and the appmanifest file, and place them in the right spot. Compared to other games.
Then start up steam. Steam will just see them as if they ever had been there.

Why dont you buy a big fat external disk, and make proper steam library and add it to steam, then login at hes pc with your account or own laptop and install all there.

Do note steam has lan transfer now, so own laptop is even better today.

I have 250 GB external SSD i use for storage if i run out of space on PC hard drives or for doing what i described in the post, but for reasons unknown to me steam refuses to acknowledge it's existance so i can't make a steam library folder there. As for logging in on his PC, that's what we did. Game was downloaded through my account onto his PC, then files were copied onto the SSD.

You need to add steam lib ( file system ) from inside storage management or is it full controll issue on external disk issue , it sounds like one of them also issue maybe. ?
