What's a good replacement for Steam to stream Windows 8 to another PC once the support ends?
I've been using Steam to stream non-Steam games from my Windows 8 PC to my Windows 11 laptop so I can play them on my TV. The games are on disc and are not compatible with Windows 10 and up due to the DRM support that was removed in Windows 10 (and 7+ with an update). I noticed that Steam is ending support for anything older than Windows 10 soon. Is there another program that could do this? I've also used my TV's screen mirroring (Roku TCL), but that caused so much lag that turn based games were unplayable.

Once Jan 1 2024 hits Steam will not work on ANY system running anything before WIN10.
The only option you have is to update the operating system on the computer you have the games on.
The only workaround is to be in offline mode and that will only work for so long.

I'm aware that the Steam will stop working on anything below Win 10. I'm just trying to find another program that will let me stream the games instead of having to use Steam. I added the games to my Steam library as a non-Steam game and streamed it that way.

The games are on disc (not through Steam), and do not work on Win 10 or above due to the OS's incompatibility with certain DRM on discs. Otherwise, I'd just be using them on my Win 10 desktop (it's a dual boot with 10 and 8).

You can attach the win 8 pc to the tv?
Or dual boot the win 11 pc and 8.

Both ways you have the games on tv

I'd like to avoid that if possible since it would require running a very long HDMI cable through multiple rooms, and moving the PC isn't an option either. Also, the Win 11 laptop has no CD drive, and the hardware is possibly too new for Win 8. It doesn't have much space either

Moonlight is probably your best bet.

There's also one called Remotr or something but I know absolutely nothing about it.

I looked at the site a bit, and it might work as long as it doesn't lag more than Steam. Steam was barely tolerable with the lag, and I was using Ethernet. I do have a Nvidia card in both PCs so I'm good there.

I doubt that a win 11 hardware is too new for 8.
Usb disk drives should be less than 20 $. And for the speed of disks, usb 3 should be fine.
Just an idea. In case you dont find a god streaming alternative.
Dont know about copy protections not liking external drives.

Bet.

Might take some patching. Maybe even 3rd party fixes, but I would be surprised if even one of those games refused to run under Windows 10 or 11.

I'll keep that in mind as a backup if Moonlight doesn't work. My Win 10 desktop motherboard won't work with Win 7 (Win 7 won't detect its USB ports, so no keyboard/mouse or way to add the drivers), so that's why I had to put 8 on it. That's why I was worried about my laptop.

Its about the copy protections.

I've looked into it, and the only way to get them to run is to patch it to run without needing the CD which is illegal. It's due to the DRM that need the CD to be in the drive for the game to work. Support was removed in Win 10+ completely, and Win 7 & 8 through an update, which I didn't install for my Win 8. There are some articles about this online.

The games haven't been released digitally, or that would probably be the easier solution.

As of 2015, the US Copyright Office has issued an exemption for using no-cd patches and similar for old PC games with dead DRM.

The DRM isn't dead, it just doesn't work with Windows versions higher than 10+
