My PC is hard crashing during gaming, is the issue my GPU or PSU or something else?
Hi all. I built my gaming PC around 2 years ago and for the first year everything ran perfect, every game I threw at it would run maxed out no problem, but recently, like in the last 6 months, I'm noticing more and more games randomly freezing up and crashing my PC, and I don't mean crashing to desktop, I mean my whole screen freezes up and after a couple of seconds my PC just reboots. No error message or anything.

Everything is running stock, no overclocks, and I'm not sure what the problem is at all. All my drivers are up to date, Windows 10 is up to date, and it's slowly happening more and more. The strange thing is that it only happens in some games while others work fine and I can play them for hours.

Could it be I need a stronger power supply? or could it be an issue with my GPU? My GPU warranty is also up at the end of this month (October) so I'm not sure if I should send it back for inspection to Zotac or not before the time is up.

I appreciate any advice. My rig is below.

10700K CPU
Zotac RTX 3080Ti 12gb
Seagate Barracuda 510 M.2 1TB HD
G.Skill Trident Z RGB Series 32GB
MSI MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI ATX Gaming Motherboard
ARESGAME 750W Power Supply

According to this list ARESGAME PSUs are to be avoided entirely. Seems they are utterly junk.

And that review is certainly confirming that.

Seriously, don't cheap out on a PSU. You don't need to overpay, but at least get a decent one.
The power supply wouldn't be a bad place to start, even if it's not the issue. Like Cathulhu said do not cheap out on PSUs. I have see more then my fair share of cheap PSUs fail and take everything else with it.
For me when this happened, it was a Windows update that turned off my XMP for the RAM.

EVGA PSU's are the best in the world. In December, usually they have high discounts to make way for the new generation PSU's. I got my 850 Platinum 80+ for $45 with free International shipping. :sadisthappy:

how about you run some benchmark software to check if it is the psu or something else?

Same problems bro. I recently found a crash on a certain save while other saves can run as usual. I don't know how to save my saves
Don't hijack other people's threads. That is very, very rude!

Every benchmark I run works fine, no crashes. Tried cinebench, Uniengine, everythign runs fine, but during games I get hard crashes.
Benchmarks often have the issue that they cause load on either the GPU or the CPU, rarely both.
Thanks for the tips guys. I will try a new PSU first and if the problem persists, then I'll send my 3080ti back for warranty inspection.

Which 850w PSU would you guys recommend? I've read that 850w should be more than enough for my rig, but I want to buy from a more reputable brand and see if this is really the issue.

good point
Hi Fret,

I had the same issue and here is what i've done.

First of all you need to be ok with all the Windows updates and your GPU drivers need to be updated.
You also need to check if your issue is not coming from your RAM or your CPU or even your hard drive (they all need to have room and never be used too high. To check that you can press ctrl + alt + del during a game to check that (for example if your CPU is at 100% it's not a good thing at all).

-Once you've checked that, right click on Windows (left side of your screen, all bellow) and click on "command prompt" (sometimes it is powershell on Windows 10, it depends of what you've chosen in your settings), then write "sfc/scannow" and press enter.
If you've got some corrupted files on Windows it will repair it. It will take a few time

Last thing you really should buy (if not already) a big ssd (1 or 2 to) and put all your games (and Windows) in it, it changes everything.

Have a good time!

Hi Koozniak, are you sure you had the same issue where PC was hard freezing and rebooting or was your issue just crashing to desktop?

As mentioned above, everything on my system is up to date, nothing is overclocked, and you can see I have a 1tb M.2 drive.

!

Thanks I gave this a try too and got the following:

C:\Windows\system32>sfc/scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.
Ok so you had corrupted files which are now repaired, your system will be better now, go try to play it should change something.
