Audio cutting out after a few seconds
Hi there!

I'm encoutering a really weird bug since yesterday.

Basically, I have my PC plugged in to an AVR which itself is plugged into my TV.

When playing games through Steam, audio cuts after a few seconds. Steam's Big Picture UI audio *itself* cuts out after a few seconds. Also happens in any game I launch through Steam.

When that happens, Windows is not able to play sound through the device any more. Playing a Youtube video results in no sound. I see Windows is sending sound as the sound control panel indicates there is but nothing reaches my AVR.

I tried plugging my PC directly into my TV and the TV into the AVR through eARC, same problem happens.

When I close Steam games, sound tends to comes back. I tried changing my sound settings from Surround to Stereo, no success. Also tried Dolby Access app from the Microsoft Store, no improvement either.

This only happens with Steam, if I play non-Steam games there is no problem. The selected output device doesn't change, it's always my AVR. The problem also doesn't happen when the output device is my headphones instead of my AVR.

I tried uninstalling and re-installing Steam, updating Nvidia drivers, etc. but nothing changed.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem? It's really driving me insane.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ok so I did the test and it cuts out even when displaying on the TV, even if the AVR isn't connected.

So it would be related to the display adapter? I really don't get what's happening here...
Download and run K-Lite. This would rule out corrupted audio codex (as it removes and repairs these) and also allows you to dive deeper inside codec settings and operation ranking.
You can at least rule out the receiver being the issue.

Another thing you could try is using the default Microsoft driver for the audio instead of Nvidia. You should be able to open Device Manager, right-click it and choose "Roll back driver".

I wouldn't try the K-lite thing, as codec packs can cause even more problems. And since you know your audio works fine through the headphone jack and TOSLINK, it's unlikely to be related to your issue.

This is a good suggestion about Nvidia HD Audio clashing with DX Audio as with my DAI will break if Nvidia HD is installed as the audio codec will take initiative over the DAI interface audio codec. K-lite had helped me route codec around and move mine up the line over DX Audio, MS Soundwave, and RealTek Codec bs, fyi. RealTek was a HUGE issue for me.

But again, I am using an external sound card...

Funny thing is, K-Lite also fixed a few other issues.

You just hate my advice all the time, yet my advice are for fixes I personally have done. :citizentears:

You choise to ignore and know better with whats wrong, you did not post spec you dont giver other crazy ideas whats wrong or cause and effect, i dont say i can fix it, but if you knew what professonal do here, or respond to such ways so be it, get a hand on technicain to look at it.
and you can say thanks to all other poster that know better,

this is why i reply you doing this to yourself, you was told to provide system info,

and again im the bad guy, same as car you bought in a shop dont make you race driver and mekaniker, and we have no clue here if you are that even

what you need to do is, say im in trouble and i should know this and accpet and help or input or stupid and crasy idea, and i will try or dont follow a suggest that is the way out of it for you, if you wish to save a buck or 2 on external support, and then you think over it has nothing to do with me. or my reply to you.

tell system spec, maybe we have crazy stupid idea you dont think on. or can think on,

we dont say take a nail and kill your hardware and buy new pc do we. it might end there someday with a user but not your hardware atm.

feel free to read re-read every line and tell us how much hardware info you actual told us, and you might get it, we can only try to reachout to you, we cant force you to do it.

if you dont want our help say so, pretty sure, other helper agree with me, you did this to yourself with lack of info that might not be needed or helper at all, but here words and spec is all we can see. ( we have no acces or know you even tell truth about what you have. same as i said
i have a 100 chaos pc in my basement , ( pretty sure all know here thats a lie )
so do yourself a favor cut through the ovn view point.
if you think IT Company dont do same, i can tell you they do, send another tech out and get fresh eye on the case. ( i dont want to repete old post of what i said, its been seen as a tool to change tech person also. ) part of faulth finding then other cant solve it, you just dont get explanation like that, and they dont even talk about it or want to.

i will make it short i was send to replace gear, while he shutdown , we small talk as we do, i then solved the case within 10 minute, other have use 3 to 5 days on ( i have no clue who and how many that has tried before ) , i did not know that, and this is not the other tech dude fault, its simple matter of experience and knowledge and past case or learning, gl with ask for help better.

what you reply here either end up with ignore you or even report you if you get angry rethink before you post, or get a techshop to look at it. ( and pay for service )

thern you have cool off then you will see i actual reach out to you even then you did not want it..

and even not Marble faulth or ( and i bet he know now why i left the post. no system spec and info on what i asked. if it even can help me or other helper here. )

I just used DDU to remove Nvidia drivers and reinstalled them manually, but the problem is still there (though it took a lot longer for it to appear, maybe 2~3 minutes). I even started hoping it was fixed ^^'

I already have the K-Lite codec pack installed as I have some more or less complex video formats on my PC. The problem didn't appear just after a K-Lite update though (didn't get an update in more than a month IIRC).

@Wynters what is DX Audio? I have Nvidia Audio HD drivers installed (I tried without it and HDMI don't appear as audio capable in that case).
@Iceira I don't get what you mean, I posted the specs? CPU, GPU, RAM, the fact I use AVR over HDMI, a soundcard over USB, a DAC over USB, etc. I gave all the details. I tried all the fix I've been given (except reinstalling Windows because I already have a very recent install).
i dont see that post or cant see it.

please use steam help, then system information, copy paste here.

and hope we can see what we looking for. or think it is. and hope any helper have a stupid idea for you can test.

Do you not get the option to choose the default MS driver?
I wasn't saying you should remove the driver, I was saying not to use Nvidia's.
(using an older version of Nvidia's may also be an option)

Just got out, I'll try this when I get back.
@Iceira it's on the thread's first page. I'll post the complete system infos panel when I get back.
Sound card name ?

Try Board or Brand name pc for support what if bug is with its driver, so many other things most forget could be the problem.

look like a on board card.

Other stupid idea turn off IGPU card, what if that make system issue and effect pc with its performance it should not do that, but you have nothing to lose then test for it.

You have other main card, all this is your board support, and they might want to know it can do that if it is this. ( dont expect steam support fix other brand driver and board issue that will never going to happend let board support deal with steam if they can proof this is a steam issue.

gl with it.

sense i dont know sound card and driver version is installed, even that matter, not the first time you can find driver on web newer thern own board has realtek driver has own webpage, but i cant say its that problem here.

Another test to try (if you didn't already) is running desktop at 1080p60 (I'm assuming you set is 4K?)
Even if you're using a HDMI 2.1 cable, the 2060 is not HDMI 2.1 compliant and manufacturers can sometimes not follow spec anyway, so there's a chance it will desync if not all components in the chain of devices play nice with one another.
If it starts working again when everything's at 1080p, that narrows down the issue to one of the devices in the chain not being able to maintain sync at higher data rates. I had the issue on an LG display where going over 100hz would cause flaky audio (and video stutter).
This one's a longshot though since you said it was working fine before, but running out of suggestions now.

Both have already been said, so I suggest you re-read the discussion if you're genuinely interested.
Yeap we all know that feeling Marble run out of ideas, and it dont make it better then we have no hands on pc.

No over clocking , even that has seen scramble or shall i called it metalic straits the sounds, even seen PSU did that in speaker as sounds, it is complicated, but more rare today then in the old days.

The reply dont even cover what board support know about the subject, or gave to windows so ppl get driver through windows update, but its oka OP problem to talk with own board or brand name support about it.
