Can't redeem borderlands GOTY edition

Hi there,
Couple of years ago I bought a retail version of Borderlands GOTY edition. Now that I want to install it using steam, it won't let me activate/redeem my key. It says that i need to activate the original game, that the key I entered a expension is. But the problem is, I only got one key, there are no other keys in the box.

The key is in format: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Please help?

You have had the game for two years and never played it?

Did you buy a physical copy or a key from a digital reseller?

Physical copy from game store, I've played it once a while back but reisntalled my Windows and haven't installed it since.

You habe to buy the game on Steam if you want to have it on Steam.

To get the game on Steam obviously. But don't you think that not all games are created equal? That Borderlands is one of the games where it doesn't work at all or at least properly and that there are tons of other games where it works?

No I didn't had steam then. I just installed it on my hard drive like in the old days. If i recall correctly, the game and all DLCs worked with the same key.

Oh and I'm talking about Borderlands 1.

Really dissapoints me, well then I think I'll just install it the old fashion way...

I've been in the same case than you, maybe at the same time I think, and the steam support replied me exactly the same thing... "you can't add it to your steam library as it is not the good shape of steam key"... but it's wrong. Well in any case it's not completely true. You can add your game to the library.
You have in your library a "Tool" section (search the tools). There's into it an application named "Borderlands Granting tool". Install it, launch it and make a scan of your DVD into your drive. And then it's added to your library !
Then your serial retail key will be accepted when you'll enter it, in order to install the DLC of the GOTY retail version. Cheers !
