How do you pin games here? (Yes I've tried looking it up without any luck)
I can unpin the two games that are there but I'm not even sure how they got there to begin with.

you tried to drag them to your taskbar, that's what pinned them.

To launch the game from your taskbar, you need to create a shortcut of the Steam executable file and modify its properties. Here are the steps to do so:

  • Locate the Steam.exe file on your computer. It is usually in the Program Files folder.
  • Right-click on the Steam.exe shortcut on your Desktop and press Copy. Then in a separate folder you can right click to Paste it.
  • Drag the shortcut icon to your taskbar. You can also rename it if you want.
  • Shift Right-click on the shortcut icon on your taskbar and select Properties.
In the Target field, add a space and then -applaunch <appID> at the end of the existing text. The appID is a unique number that identifies the game you want to launch. You can find it on the game’s store page on Steam or by using a website like https://steamdb.info/.
  • Click OK to save the changes.
Now you can launch the game from your taskbar by clicking on the shortcut icon. You can repeat this process for any other games you want to add to your taskbar.

If you want to change the icon then on the same properties window, hit Change Icon, locate the Steam/Steam/Games folder, select the appropriate .ico and press OK to apply that.

Sorry to mention, I did try that from one of those posts I found. If I'm not missing a step, that only lets me pin it to the taskbar. I'm looking to pin games to Steam's right click menu that's on the taskbar. I've also never intentionally put those games in that menu, they ended up there on their own.

Someone has to pin it to be pinned. They don't get pinned without direct user interaction.

All other games that aren't pinned are recent games installed and played.

You can also change what shows on the jump list in the settings.

Regardless of which games I play, Rocket League and Idle Slayer are the only ones to be on that list. I never put them there and I'm on a new PC. On my other PC I didn't add them to that list either. I'm afraid to unpin them because I don't know if I'd be able to pin them back. I want the ones that are there to stay, but I want to add more.

I thought maybe it could be based on the favorites list or some other collection but I don't have any custom collections, and my favorites list has 120 games in it. Not sure where Steam is keeping this pinned list at.

you manually pinned it by dragging the steam icon from your desktop to your taskbar for instance, that puts it on pin list.

I didn't though. Even when I try to pin a game that way it just pins it to the taskbar itself and not to Steam's right-click menu.

Target is set to:
E:\Steam\steam.exe -applaunch 729040

nono, not the applaunch way, like the actual shortcut Steam makes

That was one of the first things I tried and it doesn't work either https://i.imgur.com/nDqMDCH.gif

You need to enable Recent items in windows taskbar. Then when you add or launch a game you can right click on the game to pin it from the recent list

I assume you are using Win10

Windows 11, but that's ok at least that helped me find what I was looking for. Jump Lists! Just had to enable it, run a game, and then the Recent section showed up for me to pin things. Thanks ;) Again, not entirely sure why there were two games on the list without me putting them there (new PC and all) but at least I know how to add and remove them.

Your welcome! Always glad to help.

I found this helpful also, seem there is a limit on the number of items you can have on a Jump List, this allows you to change that; https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-11-increase-number-of-items-in-jump-list/60b811ad-f539-4f6e-89ae-266ad0e8f76c
