For people that buy Ubisoft game via Steam, you download Ubisoft connect client, you either sign up, or login to your existing Ubisoft account , now download your game via Steam, launch it, and it will ask if you want to link your Steam account, and game to your Ubisoft account.
Please note you must use the exact same Steam, and Ubisoft account for the game each time you want to play it.
For people that bought Ubisoft games before Uplay exist, or during early days of Uplay which was years ago, you would get a key, this key you must use on your Ubisoft account, and must use same account for your Steam account, as well use Ubisoft client, this was the old way. Problem was people thought they got free extra copy, but failed to realize it wasn't an extra copy it was their copy, and had to spend days with Ubisoft support solving the problem, that kind of why they switch to make it more dumb down so end user wouldn't cause themselves problem.
Hope this helps. Now not sure if certain old titles still give keys, but if it does follow the old method I explain.
I have couple emails 1 for my personal stuff like banking, gov, and such, 1 for my all my game/movie services like steam, gog, netflix, and such, and a junk email for mobile games, or services I don't trust as I wouldn't want to get spams on my other emails that what my junk email for make things cleaner on my important emails, and don't need to worry about spams.
If you have it on Steam, download and play it.
If you don't have it on Steam, download and play it on the platform you own it on.
Open Steam client > Download your AC unity game > launch the game.
A) If this is 1st time ever launching the game on your Steam account, it will ask if want to link to your Ubisoft connect account, once linked, it launch game.
B) If you had already link game, it just launch game that it.
