GoG on Steam Deck
Every guide and video I've seen on installing GoG games on the Steam Deck using Heroic Games Launcher seems to work flawlessly out of the box. That was not the case for me and hopefully this will save someone else hours of searching.

1. Pressing and holding the options button (three little lines) will switch from desktop to controller mode (and back again) if buttons behave as a keyboard in game.
For the longest time, I couldn't get games to register the game buttons as buttons. I tried launching Heroic Games Launcher from Steam, I tried different game pad configurations, and I even tried just setting the keys as keyboard keys. Simply pressing and holding the options button on the Steam Deck was all I needed to do when launching non Steam games. Without doing this, X would constantly bring up the software keyboard and B could not be bound.

2. Heroic Games Launcher may try to install games as Linux games. Installing everything as Windows (and using an up to date Proton) solved all of my unsuccessful installations.
Most of my installations were failing and I couldn't figure out why. It turns out that all of these games were installing the Linux version rather than the Windows version. Simply selecting Windows from the drop down during installation solved this (along with using ProtonUp-Qt to grab a couple newer Protons) has allowed me to successfully install everything aside from one pesky game that requires a specific Proton version to play (easy enough to download and configure).

Why would Steam let another company sell games on their 'console'?
Nintendo doesn't allow Microsoft or Sony to sell on their console.

Because it's a portable PC and more open in it's architecture. There's a clue in the fact you are freely able to install other OS' on there if you want to.

I've already bought games from non-steam places from my Deck. GabeN hasn't stormed my place with a Swat team (yet).

There's tons of Microsoft games on the Switch, Ori. Outer Worlds just off the top of my head. Microsoft game studios also helped port Cuphead to the switch for Nintendo.

While Valve is not Nintendo or Sony, console manufacturers don't usually allow third-party platforms on their consoles.

They do, most certainly, allow 3rd-party developers. However, while Valve could, for example, port their Counterstrike to these consoles, they would not be allowed to port Steam and then sell games for these consoles through that Steam client.

Still, Valve is not even trying to lock down their Steam Deck like this; you can run whatever you want to.

I could use some help with the heroic launcher I have it installed but it won’t let me install it swat 4 idk if I’m choosing the wrong install file or something I could use some help please

Exactly. Valve even points out in the Steam Deck FAQ that non-Steam games can be run via Proton. Not exactly an indication of a closed ecosystem.
